How Many APs?

How many AP classes do you think Carnegie Mellon considers sufficient? (I know some APs are not viewed as highly as others). I am planning to go ED to MCS Math and I am wondering how many should be okay in terms of rigor. (I will have 5 through HS including Calc BC btw with every possible other honors class in math/science as well as AP Physics with a 4.0+ GPA)

You should be fine with that amount as long as they see you are taking the most rigorous classes available to you. My son only had 1 AP exam taken before he was accepted because his school didn’t have AP and he was admitted to SCS.

Although my school offers many, due to scheduling and stuff there are 9 I could have taken. Two of them are english which is my least favorite subject and I really did not have much interest in the others either. I hope to express my love for math well in my essays also

I got into MCS ED to Math. The # of AP’s you’ve taken is judged in the context of your HS. Taking 5 APs looks great if your HS only offers 9.

How many APs does your HS offer? Which APs did you take and which ones are you planning to take?

5 APs is perfectly fine (I think it’s how many I took, and I got in). It’s important to challenge yourself, but you also have to be able to manage your time and not overwhelm yourself. As long as you did well in those (and other) classes and are reasonably well-rounded, you should be fine.

I know this is about rigor but…I also think it’s a wise choice to take APs in subjects in areas that you do NOT necessarily care about and work hard on succeeding on that test. Why? There are ALWAYS breadth/humanities requirements and it is far easier to come in with credit and get out of those requirements. This will leave you with more time to focus on college classes that interest you. It also allows for more flexibility in study abroad, additional majors, or even graduating early.

More AP is always better.

I have 16 till end of high school + 2 college classes and I got waitlisted (got all A’s in them too)

I was admitted taking all 7 that my school offers and 2 online for 9 total. However, I think 4 or more is sufficient for that specific category. I think the type of APs also matters for your intended major.

I took 12 (~20 available) and was accepted to Mellon and Dietrich.
