How many are YOU applying to/auditioning for?

Just wanted to comment on the earlier post about being younger than other auditionees due to an August birthday.

While this may be true in many states, in California the cut off date for school entrance is Dec. 1st - not Sept. 1st. So there will be California auditionees with fall birthdays who are even younger than those born in August. This really shouldn't be a factor in deciding about schools/auditions.

Our family (and I'm sure you realize that college searches become a family event:)) is looking at several colleges:

From the "Ivys"

University of Michigan
OCU
Boston Conservatory

Others

Emmerson
UCLA
UNT
Point Park
Webster

We've ruled out NYU (way too expensive).

Well, I'm only auditioning at the Unifieds except for NYU because we simply can't afford to be carting me all over the country for various auditions (I live in Missouri, so everything's far away!). My school lists are as follows:

DEFINITE:

NYU
BoCo
Webster
Roosevelt
Otterbein
CCM
Hartt
Emerson

POSSIBLE (but probably only if as a walk-in):

UMich
Ithaca
UArts

BACKUPS:

Columbia U
Missouri State
Illinois Wesleyan

I know from experience that NYU IS expensive!! But, thought I'd mention that it wasn't my son's MOST expensive option when his Tisch scholarship was taken into account. Sometimes schools can surprise you.
Best of luck on those auditions (and on the scheduling--which may be just as challenging)

MissMillenium,

I wouldn't include Illinois Wesleyan as a backup school. I believe they shoot for an MT class of 8 (4 boys and 4 girls) each year. I believe they had between 80-100 girls audition for 4 spots last year which yields a 4-5% acceptance rate, similar to other competitive programs. Its an excellent program, just not a backup.

I'd done research on the school's theatre department (the university's been trying to recruit me for years), but I somehow failed to realize that they were so selective. Thanks so much for the tip!

I'm just a junior, so I have a year left, but as of now, these are the schools I want to apply to (16). Would 16 be too many? Should I shorten my list at all by next fall?

University of the Arts (MT)
Baldwin-Wallace College (MT)
Boston Conservatory (MT)
Columbia College (MT)
CSUF (MT)
Emerson College (MT)
University of Hartford- The Hartt School (MT)
Ithaca College (MT)
University of Miami (MT)
University of Michigan (MT)
Marymount Manhattan College (Acting w/ MT minor)
NYU Steinhardt (MT)
Pace University (MT)
Syracuse University (MT)
USC (Acting)
Wagner College (Theatre Performance)

In my humble opinion, sixteen is a little bit overkill, Jess. By the time you start applications and realize how much time you have to put into each one, I think you'll drop at least a handful. As to my list, I'm applying to eleven schools, none of which are non-audition, but I figure I'm a guy with eleven chances, I should get a bite. Hopefully. But here's my list (sort of, kind of in order):
NYU
CMU
U Michigan
Boston Conservatory
U Hartford
Baldwin-Wallace
Otterbein
CCM
Syracuse
University of Arizona
U Miami
I'm doing eight of them at the Chicago Unifieds and three on-campus. Hopefully, I'll get to meet a bunch of y'all sometime this year. Have fun finishing those apps!

I agree that 16 is too many. I would say (and I'm definitely not an expert, but from what I've read) that anywhere from 6-12 schools is a reasonable amount - and it depends on the application/audition requirements. I can't imagine auditioning for sixteen programs though and keeping my sanity intact. You're not to the point yet, though, where you have to finalize your list... so the fact that you're interested in that many schools now is a good thing.

Unfortunately, the more I read in these forums, the more programs I want to audition for... I have to start eliminating some or I won't be able to handle them all! lol.

We met a girl at the LA unifieds who auditioned for 19 programs. She also did the Chicago Unifieds so she could fit them all in! I don't know how she managed to have a life at the same time, but different strokes for different folks.
