How many colleges/universities did you/your child apply to? Class of 2021

With so much unpredictability this year, I’m curious how many schools folks applied to this year. I think S21 is at 14. That is one more than the number that his older sibling applied to a few years ago.

My S21 submitted 8 apps. He originally had 10 or 12 on his list, but he was tired of writing essays.

My son originally had 8 on his list but ended up only submitting apps to 5 lol. 3 acceptances so far, waiting on his top choice…5th one is a super reachy reach that he won’t be upset over when he doesn’t get in

S21 applied to 12 compared to S18 who applied to 9.

Class of 2021 here, applied to 18 schools, waiting on 17, my top choice, Stanford, accepted me REA. Purely an ego/for fun thing, realistically I could’ve applied to just 1.

I personally applied to 7 schools. At a point in time, around last summer, my list was around about 10-13 schools. I think that it really just depends on the person and what they know they want. For me, I very specifically knew what I wanted, which made it easier to sum down my list, but I know a lot of people who don’t and are applying to many more.

I applied to 8. I was going to apply to 10, but an emergency surgery and then some acceptances changed that plan for me.

DS applied to 18…5 decent options already and he feels good about one more, but as a white male in STEM with no hooks, there is little chance with the remaining ones, although a very strong applicant…

D21 applied to 9 this year. Accepted to 5 so far. She’s already narrowed her choices down to 4 schools, two of which have not yet sent out their decisions. (and will be easy eliminations if they decline her admission). This application year was easier for her than it was for her sister last year. She was a little more certain of the type of school she was looking for and did not want to bother with a lot of extra apps. She likely would have applied to only 7 but I did encourage her to submit 2 additional apps because of the potential uncertainties this year. In hindsight, she probably did not need those two extras.

D20 applied to 11 last year. This was probably at least two too many, but it was our first rodeo.

We saw a number of kids submit 15 plus applications last year. It just seemed like a waste of application fees and effort to us, if a kid has a good idea of what he/she wants in a school and major (maybe many do not). Scholarship applications require time and effort as well, on top of the regular apps!

Applied to 10 schools, accepted at 6, and waiting on the last 4.

I did 7, got accepted to my ED when I stopped. Wish I had applied to less.

S applied to 8.

My gpa isn’t the best but everything else is strong, though I applied TO to most (mostly oos). I started out with 10 (5 is /5 oos) because I was afraid how my gpa would affect my chances. Have been accepted to 4, deferred by 2 and denied by 1.
Have since applied to 4 more, since between September, when I first started submitting and December, I know better what I’m looking for. It helped that I’m finally taking classes this year that touch on my major (finance) and it solidified my interest. So the 4 I added are strongest in finance curriculum/clubs.
So now I wait. Seven more to hear from with my favorites being in the bunch.
Hope and a prayer

applied to 14 - deferred from ED and after the fear that it was crazy competitive this year, added 2 more right before the buzzer. Probably overkill

This somewhat happened with S21. He has sharpened his focus after researching so many schools. Also felt more confident after a match EA admission.

The other thing is that he’s visited only one school and it’s the least good apparent fit for him. Hoping he will be able to visit at least 2-3 in April. Will need choices for that.

7 but 2 were UCs so that’s the same application and just paying an extra fee.

D21 applied to 22. She had 10 on the list from the NE, where she has never been being from CA and having to cancel our planned spring and summer trips. She added 5 UC’s (1 application) and 4 additional CA safeties. She was going to apply to another 2-3 PNW safe-ish schools, but was accepted to the first 4 so now has a good balance of COVID-safe affordable schools nearby and schools in other regions if we are comfortable with long plane flights again.
