for my brag sheet i want to place a lot of my ECs in the sections, but i do a lot of things online. i write for a magazine, i write for my own personal blog and now i’m going to be a funding coordinator in a stem company online. how many online ECs is too much to put in my senior brag sheet? i’m afraid my teachers won’t understand the activities and not even pay attention to it. it depends on how much i spend on online activities per week because intensity varies but i expect to be working more with the funding coordinator internship/job.
if anyone can give me some guidance that would be cool! should i downplay it or keep it just enough and not talk about it too much? or should i talk about it as much as i’d like?
Your LoR writers may not have any comments to make on activities they don’t see you involved with or get feedback from other teachers. And it can fall flat with adcoms when it’s obvious the teacher or GC is just repeating from a brag sheet. “I hear Susie also writes online.”
It’s not the amount of time but the significance of those activities, to the adcoms at your target schools. And not only can writing be solitary, but many adcoms aren’t looking for kids glued to the computer for interactions. Hope you also have school activities and community service.
My kid had a lot of ECs to put on her application. Instead of listing each one, she grouped them, like Ballet (listed some programs and major performances), Volunteer Work (listed various volunteer programs), Student Government, Journalism, etc. She bolded some major ECs to draw Adcoms attention to them.
FYI - my kid worked with a private counselor and it was him who suggested to group ECs.
I agree with @lookingforward that the LOR shouldn’t just have a laundry list of your ECs. It’s better for your teacher to mention EC(s) you were heavily involved in or EC he/she has worked on with you (advisor to your club, head of volunteer work you participated in).
