How many colleges is it normal to apply to?

I don't want to be annoying to the teachers who are writing recomendations for me, yet at the same time I am on a quest for merit money at top schools.

Also, if I am applying to a school that accepts the common app, but I am using the school's own app, is it still ok to use common app recomendation forms?

I did twelve myself, and I think it was a comfortable number [at least for me] especially since I was so paranoid about getting rejected so I used the mentality of the more apps you have the better your chances of getting into one, but yeah I was definitely happy with the end result :D

And as to your question, I did eleven common apps and one personal app for MIT and I just had the teachers fill out MIT's recommendation b/c usually what teachers do, or at least in my school is, they write a letter and usually will say see attached and then just do the checkboxes so really it isn't too bad on them, though granted I'm not the one filling them out :p

I applied to 11 US universities. But it really depends on the applicant. IF you have 4 or 5 schools that you really like, and they cover the spectrum from reach to safety, that's enough. Personally, I recommend at least 2 reaches, 3 matches and 2 safeties.

It also depends on high you want to shoot. If your idea of a safety is Middlebury then apply to 10+. If you can be happy at UMass, 4 would do it.

To me, anything over three is ridiculous. If a student has more than 3 schools to which he wants to apply, he need to do more research...

I wish I could only apply to two schools and be guaranteed a spot in one: MIT and Caltech. Truth is, people aren't always sure they'll get into one of their top three, so they start going down the ladder until they hit a school they're pretty sure they'll get into.

Hmmm, you sound exactly like me, though I had 12 rather and 11 were in the northeast, plus i had eight reaches which I figure you're college selection will be very top heavy as well so good luck with that.

I don't think anything over 10 is ridiculous. I'm looking at applying to like 15, just to make sure I get into at least 30% of them, so I can have a good selection to choose from in late April.

How can yall afford applying to like more than 8. If you apply to 15 then you gotta pay like $750. Avg of 50 dollars per application. I would apply to like 10 If I could afford it.

I think 12 is a perfect number. I have 2 safeties, 4 matches, 2 high matches/ low reaches and 3 reaches so far. I'd love another match. Or maybe another match and a reach; 1 of my matches has no application fee.

12-13 is perfect for any CCer who feels they NEED to go to a top 15 school/ top 5 LAC.

Well its easy to afford them, there a fee waivers, free online applications, a school programs which will pay for your apps. So in my opinion cost isn't important but the level of quality of each app is.

I'm low income so I'm going to get fee waivers.

I did 9 with no true safety. Just do as many schools as you feel comfortable with. But I think most people just decide they are going to apply to all the Ivies and then a few other top schools plus some safeties in order to hopefully ensure their attendance at a top school. in my opinion, it's a very silly idea.
