how many more years to be a neurologist ?

starting my freshman year of college soon and thinking about my future. just wondering, if i were to specialize as a neurologist, how many more years of training would i need (in addition to med school)? thanks

4 med and then another 4 years I believe assuming no fellowship.

4 years of medical school
1 Transistional Year (usually include at least 6 months of internal med)
3 years of Adult Neurology

Common fellowships include: Stroke/Vascular, Neurophysiology (EMG/NCS), Epilepsy, Movement, Neuro-Critical Care (most are 1 year, but there are 2 year ones that require fellows to do an additioanl year of research)

An increasingly popular speciality is interventional neurology, which requires 4 years of neurology, 1 years of stoke/vascular fellowship, then another fellowship (2 yrs long) in interventional neurology. So 7 years total to do interventional neurology. There are turf wars going on since this has been mainly a field for neurosurgery and radiology. So in some programs you might find the fellowship under anyone of those 3 departments.

There is also child neurology which is a separate residency from neurology (i.e adult neurology). Its 5 years long (2 years peds, 1 year adult neuro, and 2 years child neuro).
