I get the feeling from reading all about the hectic i-banking lifestyles that anyone who's crazy enough to go into i-banking is doing it purely for the money. I want to know if it's possible to be passionate about it.

Are there college students who're actually PASSIONATE about i-banking not just for the money, just as others would be about law or medicine or public service?

Do passionate i-bankers lose their passion after 2 years as an analyst simply due to the lifestyle?

I've met people in the markets side who absolutely love it and would still want the job if pay was a fraction of its current level. Not sure about IBD. Pure speculation but maybe it's easier to be passionate about global economics and risk (markets) than corporate finance and random mergers (banking).

But I'm sure there are a few. Look hard enough and you'll find at least one or two people who are passionate about computer keyboards or the evolution of the paper production process or some other random thing that most people consider horribly boring.

hm, is money really the only way to be passionate abt ibanking? is it possible to be passionate about the job of an ibanker itself? is it really so terrible and boring?

Well I'm extremely passionate about money, but I'm also a guy that likes to overwork (believe it or not)...I like fast pace, difficulty, pressure. I guess I am passionate for the profession of IBanking (even though I'm not a banker...yet).

I think I'm passionate about I-Banking, and not just for the money. I learned very early in my life that materialistic things don't make me happy. I met some I-bankers last year and they told me about the lifestyle and etc. Plus, after researching about I-banking, I began to like the industry even more. I don't read much about the salary. Some sites says 60k, but others say you can earn 100k+. I don't know what to believe, but I don't care much about the salary as long as it's 60k+.

I know that I am definitely passionate about Business - especially corporate finance. I really like I-banking, but who knows, maybe, after I get the job (if I do) and if I hate it, then I'll get out.

I guess you can't really know whether you're really passionate until you've worked in that industry. Either way, I am planning on being an I-banker for some part of my life. :) I know I like I-banking for more than just the money.

I don't know how you can be passionate about a job where you work 70-80 hours a week. I don't think I can do anything I enjoy that long, including watching TV, playing video games etc so working that is just crazy. And the reason IBankers quit after a few years is because they get burnt out. It's just not feasible to work 70-80 hours a week and sometimes more because you just go crazy.

^ For a person that lacks IBanking passion, I'd agree msl2008...but there are people who don't make a career change because that's what they're destined to do. A lot of people love basketball or may consider it their favorite sport, but to go professional is a different game. Hundreds of hours a month practicing...thats passion.

If you aren't passionate about it, you won't last long no matter what you're doing and you'll never be happy. And yes, it's very possible to be passionate about IB. There's a thrill that comes with completing a deal or doing something that others said couldn't be done.
