How many schools should you apply to?

12 schools to be exact. I plan on applying for a PhD in chemical engineering. It's really interesting. I only applied to 2 schools for undergraduate school and got accepted into both. Now, I plan on applying to 6 times as many schools because well...graduate admissions is in part like a game of chance, in my opinion. I mean, you need good grades, high standardized test scores, ECs, research, letters of recommendation, the whole bit...but then it doesn't truly guarantee acceptance just because you have all of those things. I am guessing that I may only get accepted into a 2 or 3 schools out of the 12 I plan on applying for. By the way, for anyone who cares....

I plan on applying to:

1)Cincinatti
2)Cornell
3)Delaware
4)Lehigh
5)UMass
6)MIT
7)Ohio State
8)Rutgers
9)SUNY: Buffalo
10)Tufts
11)Virginia
12)West Virginia

As you can see...I favor staying relatively close to home (I'm from PA) instead of going to (for example) a California school, although there are obviously some terrific schools there. I really hope I can get into Lehigh...

I applied to 9.
