How many students are there usually in a class room?

Is it just like UCLA and UCB where there can be at times 300 students? Or are there usually about around 50 students per classroom? Also, how much personal attention does a student typically get?

I really like UCSC but if the class sizes are too big then that's a major negative.

For the very commonly taken classes, there can be 300 to 400 students. I’ve only been in 2 classes that large in 2 years. Lower division classes tend to be around 150 students, and upper division is 75 or lower. In my experience with engineering at least. I hear some majors, like Lit, tend to have much smaller classes.

I get plenty of personal attention, but that’s because I bother to go to office hours. Most professors are of the mindset that they will give as much time as necessary to students who ask for it.

I had a class last quarter with only nine students enrolled (counting myself).

Most of my classes range from 20 to 30 students, but I have had a few that were roughly 120 for lecture with the 20-30 range for discussion section. Most of my upper-division (which is the bulk of my course load since I transferred) have been in the 20-30 student range.

I’m a Lit and Theatre Arts double major :B. YMMV depending on level of course (upper or lower division) and department. And I have the same experience as Liesel: no trouble getting personal attention as long as I seek it out.

That’s what I forgot to clarify on! Most all classes do have a separate discussion or lab section, which is no more than 30 students in most cases. This allows you to have more one-on-one time with the TA/s. Depending on the professor, they can be an invaluable resource.

Like the others said, it depends on your major, but when I was in Film (not recommended), upper div was 40-80, and lower divs were more like 120-200.

Thank for the replies!

So since it varies depending on the major, how are the psychology and international business major class sizes?

Does engineering seriously have that big classes :(

Yup.

My largest class specifically for engineering was 150 students. It only got smaller from there on out. You also have to remember that not everyone comes to lecture by a long ways, and even fewer go to talk to the professor after class. You won’t be lost in the crowd if you need extra help.

@Imagirl: No idea about those majors, for the most part. I know Psych 1 200+ students, and that by the time you do your first upper division class, it’s more like 100. Psych is a highly impacted major.

I think intro econ had 300-400 students and it was probably my largest course. After that, most of my classes were in the 100-130 range for upper div econ courses. I did take a few seminars courses that only had about 30 students though.
