How many volunteer hours will I need to get into MIT?

I’m a freshie in high school have have a current weighted GPA of 4.25. Anyone know many hours of volunteer work to get into MIT?

You don’t need any. Community service is treated like any other EC. As long as you’re dedicated and accomplished in several areas (music, sports, debate, etc), it doesn’t matter what the area is generally.

You don’t need any level of community service as far as I know. If you do community service work it should be becuse it is important to you.

But more importantly, you are a freshman. It is too early to target any specific college (especially such a competitive one). You should: 1) do as well as possible in the most rigorous curriculum you can manage 2) when the time comes study for standardized tests 3) get involved in things you enjoy/feel passionate about and work towards eventually getting leadership positions and 4) enjoy your friends and family. Come back to CC when you are a junior and have two years of a HS GPA and some standardized tests.

It isn’t too early to start thinking about where you would like to go to college. I started thinking about it in elementary school when I found out about MIT. Just don’t let it consume you. Use your desire to go to a top school as a guide to help you better yourself and do well in school. Do what you like to do and not just because it looks good on an application.

Read the entire blog entry from the post above. Much more good advice than what was just quoted in the post.

Doing something because you think it will get you MIT as opposed to because you want to is unlikely to be effective. Asking what the minimum number of hours is indicates that this is something you don’t want to do. So don’t.
