Does anyone know how many students are the waitlist is this year?

How many do you think CMC will take off the waitlist?

And if I get in after being waitlisted, will I get any financial aid? I kinda need it...but I love CMC so I'm going to put my name on the waitlist.

The better question is this: of the number offered a spot on the Claremont McKenna College waiting list, how many will send back the response form asking to remain on the waiting list? Believe it or not, some students do not like the drawn-out uncertainty of waiting until the middle of May or the beginning of June to find out where they will be going to college in September, so they tell the college that offered them a spot on its waiting list to forget about it. Colleges then factor in the waiting list yield, just like the admission yield, and intentionally offer more waiting list spaces than they will actually need in order to allow for some erosion. This early in April colleges have no idea how many will still be on their waiting lists after May 1. But it costs you nothing to send back the response form.

Yes, place a deposit at another school until you get off of a wait list. This is expected and not unethical.

Colleges have Common Data Sets that show many things about their student body - racial %s, how many return after freshman year, how many graduate, types of aid awarded and average amount, etc.

I cut and pasted this from the data set for last year. The previous years are available on the CMC website. I’ve put a link below.

C2 Freshman wait-listed students (students who met admission requirements but whose final
admission was contingent on space availability)
Yes No
C2 Do you have a policy of placing students on a waiting list? yes
C2 If yes, please answer the questions below for fall 2008 admissions:
C2 Number of qualified applicants offered a placed on waiting list 511
C2 Number accepting a place on the waiting list 222
C2 Number of wait-listed students admitted 0

So it looks like the didn’t take anyone last year off the list. You should look though the past 2 or 3 years data to see if last year was normal or not.

Just based off the random sample of posters on the Official Decisions thread for class of 2013 on this board, I get a sense that an unusually high number of people were waitlisted. This shouldn’t be too surprising considering this really was one of the toughest years for the admissions office. They had to handle the highest number of applications ever, yet accept fewer applicants in comparison to last year (and maybe even some past years). The high number of wait-lists means that there were a lot of super qualified applicants that they couldn’t all accept. Don’t be too discouraged!! Definitely give the waitlist a shot if you would still like to come to CMC.

P.S. you can still receive financial aid if you submitted the FAFSA/CSS Profile to CMC. They take care of 100% of students’ need for aid. No need to worry about that! :)
