How much does your student need each month for living expenses (room & board, spending money, entertainment, etc)?

I would need approximately $1000 per month today for room & board (unlimited food and on campus lodging) for 9 months plus probably $50 a month for extras. Summers I would live for free at my parents.

What about your student?

DD is a college student living off campus. We deposit $850 per month into her checking account. This covers her share of the rent and utilities…and her food and toiletry items. Last summer when she stayed on campus and was working full time, we asked HER to pay $200 a month towards her food. So we were only depositing $650 into her account.

Anything she spends beyond that is on her dime. She works 10-15 hours per week (depending on what is happening at her job…sometimes it’s 15 because of events she has planned).

She is in the San Francisco Bay area in an expensive area.

Does she have to pay for her apartment over the summer?

Yes…either pay or sublet. Last summer, she worked at her college full time so we paid the rent for the house while she lived there. The summer before she was taking classes so yes…rent paid then too (and we paid for the food because she wasn’t working full time).

Our son lives off campus in a house he shares with two other guys. His portion of the rent is about $450 and we give him $700 which has to cover rent, utilities and food. He and his roommates share a dog too so any vet bills, dog food is on him too. He uses his own money if that’s not enough. He really doesn’t like to cook but does like to eat, so I guess he’s figured out how to cook something.
