I'm interested in going to the University of Pittsburgh, which is a public university in Pennsylvania. However, I am an Illinois resident. Do public schools give good amounts of financial aid to students from outside states?

Pitt gives great merit money. Lots of full tuition and $10,000 scholarships to top students. Apply early in your senior year.

In general (some East Coast exceptions are Michigan and Virginia–both UVA and William and Mary), state schools love to cherry pick the top students from other states. There are several threads on here that talk about merit money. Take a look at the top of the pages where some topics are “stickied.”

Some schools do and some don’t. If you get lucky the out of state schools will become affordable. If you have interest in attending the school apply and see if you get aid but do apply elsewhere.

There’s a difference between OOS financial aid and OOS scholarships.

Typically, it’s difficult to get strong OOS financial aid to an OOS school, because what would the purpose be of charging an OOS rate, if the college then just covered it with financial aid.

That said, some OOS schools will give some FA to very desirable students…maybe they’re URMs or they’re from a very desirable area of the country or they have very desirable stats.

Also, some OOS schools give merit scholarships to OOS students if they have desirable high stats.

But, in general, an OOS student with “just good” stats is not going to get a great FA package or merit aid from an OOS school.
