AP was started by the Ivies, to better prepare incoming freshman. Most of the quasi-Ivies do the same thing as the Ivies. This just about covers top 20 schools. If you are not planning to get into top 20 schools AP is no big deal. GPA, and SAT scores should do the job.

question:

i finished junior year and going to apply ea to yale this fall. in soph yr, i took 2 aps and got a 3 and 4. in a sudden angry-inspiration, i took 7 ap's this year and got all 5's. would my soph yr scores "taint" my app?

turtlecake67

You should be fine. They look at the big picture; 7-5's looks good.

well if you have low AP scores and high grades the admissions is gunna think your is below standards thus discrediting your high GPA.

I had only 1 ap (school offers a bunch), and I got into Stanford. I;m not a minority, athlete, famous, legacy, or have donated a lot of $$$. Nuff' said

its just stanford :-p
and besides, not taking APs is often made up for by different EC's or (in the case of Stanford) amazing essays.

but APs are quite important still, if you go to a school that only offers APs it demonstrates the rigor of your coursework. on the school report for your conselor, it does ask if you've taken the most rigourous coursework available at your school.

APs dont really have that much affect, I just self-reported mine, and I will send the actual scores to the college I gain acceptance at...mostly with what everybody is saying, only at the really tough private schools will high AP scores help

I agree with matrixrebloated. Ivies and other top schools have hundreds of applicants, and AP scores are just another way of classifying them. Obviously, the student that took one AP and failed won't be up to par with the student that took seven APs and got all 5s. At other schools, however, AP scores are used more for credit, and don't necessarily help in the admissions process.

Furthermore, if you get a great grade in the class but don't do so well on the AP test, something tells the school that the A you got in the AP class really isn't worth an A.

a 5 with a B or a 3 and an A can tell alot about you and your school

At London School of Economics, they don't even look at your GPA, your SAT, or your SAT II's, all they are interested in are your AP's, because they regard them kind of like A-levels. Of course, the most important part is the essay, but that is just like in any other university. I guess it all depends on the university.

Actually, in the US, the essay doesn't matter.

Chill out, ballin4ever! A B+ is not a horrible grade. Not even a bad grade.

what if say you got all 5's on 5 or 6 AP's, but just bomb one test?
