How much do AP Scores matter?

Hey guys.

I was wondering how much effect AP Scores will have on college admissions.
I have a solid GPA and SAT score but my AP scores arent that great.
Can people get denied by colleges because of their AP scores?

Also, do you have to report all of your AP scores when you apply to UC's?

thanks

wow, what an original question...

if you have low ap scores and high ap class grades, adcoms will think, "grade inflation!" this is especially true if this is the case in many subjects. it will probably cast doubt onto the validity of your gpa. that said, bad ap scores by themselves probably won't lead to a rejection.

i am not sure for the uc's, but for every school i applied to i self-reported on the app. i sent the official report to the school i am matriculating at.

Bad AP Scores dont hurt, but good AP scores help..
you dont even have to report bad AP scores..

What would be a "bad" AP score. My D just received hers today:
AP US 3
English Lit/Comp 3

How would the 2nd level LACs (below Top 25) view those? Any comments appreciated.

Thanks

Only the very top private schools (HYPS) might look down on 3's on AP test scores. Goodcontent is right.

has anyone here been accepted to the top UCs (Berkeley, LA, San Diego) that has failed 2 or more AP Exams?

Calmac - a 3 is considered passing. Check the websites of some of the colleges in which your daughter is interested to see how they give AP credit (you usually have to do an internal search on the website for "advanced placement credit"). The credit policies vary quite a bit from college to college.

did you guys call? if so, when does the letter come?

We're in California and got ours in the mail yesterday (7/3).

I know MANY people that have gotten into the top-tier UC's and failed more than 2 AP's (about half the people at my school). Don't even sweat it for the UC's... (I failed Spanish and still managed to get into some good schools).

do you have to send ap scores to colleges?

Are 4's considered bad by HYPS? How about UC's like Berkeley and LA?

good question, virtuoso. I am wondering the same thing.
Any answers?

AP scores are self-reported in applications. Therefore, you can choose which scores you want the colleges to see. If you don't want them to see the scores, then you don't have to show them.

however, squiggle, if you dont report a lot of your AP scores then its pretty obvious that you didnt do too greatly on them...

4's are not at all considered bad. Check HYPS websites and they still offer some credit for certain classes if you get a 4.

Remember, they dont count against you but can count for you

You don't have to send them, so it isn't required. SAT IIs are required and are much more important.

I think there was someone last year on the Pton EA (accepted) thread that had a 1600 old SAT and like 3s and 2s on his APs..

really? are one or two 2's considered really bad for say, the top 20-30 liberal arts colleges?

If you fail APs, you will have a VERY hard time getting into the top UCs (Berkeley and LA). As for if you get a four, i would say it definetly wouldnt hurt, but it probably wont look great to the top UCs

AP Chemistry affected my GPA . The teacher is very tough and only 1 person received an A for that course. Mine was a B. But my AP Chemistry is a 5. So I am hoping that colleges will see that my school does not inflate grades. In fact the teacher is a little too tough (all her students gets a 5 except 1. Total of 30 kids)

I thought that the only role AP scores played were in determining credit and placement and stuff? I didn't know that poor AP scores could harm your chances into getting into college, I thought that they could only help?
