How much do coops pay?

I was just wondering if anyone knew any of the average salaries that coops of different majors payed?

  • Thanks!

It varies - some are no pay - some are stipend - some pay $15 an hour - some pay $30 an hour. It depends on the company, the location, the major, your experience level (1st vs. 3rd co-op).

The suggested salaries on this page is interesting- http://www.ccis.northeastern.edu/experiential-learning/employers/ but are only computer science.

Here is a similar item from CSSH school - Compensation is set by the employer and depends on the industry, the level of the position, and the local economy. Co-op coordinators can provide specific compensation information. Students do not pay tuition while on co-op. Most CSSH jobs pay between $12 and $16 per hour. Co-op salaries for some positions tend to be lower or unpaid because that is the norm in those industries (museums, international development, government, etc.).

Here is one for architecture - Compensation is set by the employer and depends on the industry, the level of the position, and the local economy. Architecture students typically get paid between $12-17 an hour, depending on experience and level of school. Students do not pay tuition while they are on co-op.

Unpaid coops would be in CSSH and some CAMD majors. In DMSB, ENG, CCIS and Bouvé all coops would be paid.

Many of the co-op job postings indicate pay (or pay range). Unpaid are clearly marked and you don’t have to apply to an unpaid co-op unless you think that would work for you. My daughter’s CSSH co-op advisor was very clear in telling people to carefully consider before applying to something unpaid.

do bouve coops pay well? I’ve heard mixed things

Bouve will pay in the $15-20 range with some outliers, as far as I know from my friends. Depends on what area you go into even within Bouve.

That’s fair, I’m in the health science major and I plan on doing more clinical co-ops but still it depends how competitive of an applicant I am, I guess.

This is a dumb question, but during co-op, I assume you don’t get charged tuition? If not, what happens to the scholarships/grants you receive during each semester, do they withhold the scholarships during co-ops?

@Iapplyanywhere Correct, you don’t get charged tuition. Your scholarships/grants are only applied during academic semesters. On co-op, your pay should cover your living expenses.
