Thanks to all who are sharing their ideas and perspectives. It’s great to see young adults and parents sharing thoughts on anything!

We live in the San Francisco Bay Area. Our D is a HS Junior and interested in MT. Does anyone know of a good resource for monologue coaching in this area?

Thanks for all the different opinions. I live in Brazil. Here it’s not common that someone wants to study theater and even less common to get audition coaches, even though the auditions are way harder (colleges usually have 3 callbacks and applicants have to do whole scenes of the plays+a written test on some plays+5 hour tests about general HS knowledge), the bar is set pretty low. Besides, I have only heard of two girls who are studying theater in London and in the U.S. (and I live in one of the largest cities in the world).

I got a coach who’s a Meisner actor and has coached the girl who’s studying in England. She’s really good, but because it’s really expensive, I’m afraid I’ll only be able to have three classes with her. I was feeling nervous about being “underprepared”, but after reading some of the posts I’m feeling better.

Also, EmmyBet: I’m one of those kids who have had no help from parents at all. I researched everything by myself, applied to the colleges and even paid the application fees with my own allowance. I booked my auditions, plane tickets, my hostels and/or CouchSurfing hosts, and will be traveling to CA alone soon. My father doesn’t support my choice and my parents don’t really help me do anything. I’ve been traveling by myself since I was 14 and that has made me pretty independent. So, if anyone else is in the same situation, don’t be scared! ;)

We’re all pulling for you, milkshakespeare! You should be really proud of yourself - I know things will work out well for you.

D met someone she knew at Chicago Unifieds who had taken the bus 4 hours by herself and was sleeping on a friend’s floor quite far from the site. She did pretty well with her admissions, from what we heard. Pluck and determination can take you a long way, especially in this field.
