how much does ECs play into your chances?

My son, rising 12th grader and interested in JMU, has loads of ECs (NHS, Beta Club, Boys State, Varsity football, youth council, tutor, etc.). How much weight do ECs have along with GPA/SATs? His numbers could be high in those areas a tad, so wondered if ECs help?

I would like to think ECs play a huge roll in your acceptance, because heres why. I am an out of state student, who was a high school 2009 grad…so i am entering my freshman year at JMU and i was accepted with a 3.72 GPA 10 honors classes, but my SATs were a 1510/2400, which is terrible compared to their 1150 student average. Anyways my ECs were good, from varsity sports to student government. I also volunteered alot at 4 places, not often but when i did it was usually for 4-8 hrs. Either way I believe that if I wasnt involved i would not have been accepted on gpa and SAT alone. I find myself to be lucky to have been accepted through early action. But yes i would think they put weight on the ECs if i was accepted!

Likewise, daughter’s SAT less than stellar. However, her EC’s were top notch. Various student organizations, with leadership roles. Lots of volunteer work. She was accepted AND asked to apply for honors. Good luck!
