Is work experience an important factor in the transfer application?
I'm hoping that my work experience can pull some miracles and get me into schools I wouldn't have a chance at with my GPA.

ex: 3.5-3.55 for CMU, NYU and BC

I’m curious about this too. How important is work experience?

I am also interested in the answer to this question.

bumppppppp

I dont have any real work experience. Is that bad?

I’m hoping to use my work experience as leverage to transfer and I am getting letters of rec from the CEO’s of both companies. Since my intended major is Finance (AEM), I hope my internships will show an interest in the major as well.

Same here Shea. I also used my work experience in my essay and how big of an impact that had upon me as a business major. I hope that give us the edge!

What about for non-business majors? I’m a History major and have previous volunteer experience in a museum, but there’s nothing like that in the place I moved to.

bump? 10char

bump

I’m really hoping it does… The only reason I am not a full time student right now is because I have a full time job just to be able to pay for part time classes at cc. I don’t want that to reflect negatively…

Think of the job/work as a piece of the puzzle for adcoms. For a clearly low-income student, it might point to hardship. For a job that is intern or major related, it might point to real-world experience. For a student who puts in regularly more than 20 hours a week and still manages a solid gpa, it points to perseverance. For other students, it may point to being well-rounded (not just an egghead who only studies).

I think it is how the job fits into the rest of the application–just as some ECs do zippo to help an application and other ECs in context of the whole could be a tipping point.

Even a 10 - 12 hour a week job during the school year at least points to the student’s ability to manage time. However, a 10 hour a week job is not going to necessarily boost a completely sub-par app over the top.

Context is everything.

First semester for me I was working 10ish hours a week - managed a 3.75 GPA for that semester. Since then, I’ve had a summer + winter internship working 35+ hours a week, so I’ve done BOTH it will help.
