I have an EFC of 0. The school I'm going to is in-state and about $7,800 (UW-Milwaukee). I'll be living at home, and I'm not going to use loans or work/study. I'm going to apply for scholarships, but it'd be helpful to know how much I'll be expected to pay. Thanks.

Go to the school’s web site and look for the Common Data Set. See how much/what percentage of people receive aid from the school.

Average Users % of attendees
Federal Grant Aid $3,164 825 20%
State & Local Grant Aids $2,025 827 20%
Institutional Grant Aid $2,684 143 3%
Student Loan Aid $4,196 2,436 58%
Any financial aid type 2,853 68%

For federal grants, with a 0 EFC you should get the maximum Pell grant which was $4731 for 2008-2009. You may also get a SEOG grant depending on your school’s policy for awarding this. At my kid’s schools a 0 EFC qualifies them for SEOG. The maximum SEOG varies depending on the school. (At my daughter’s school it is $2,000. At my son’s it is lower). If you meet the academic criteria you may also qualify for the ACG (Academic Competitiveness Grant) which is $750 for freshmen. The ACG requires Pell eligibility and meeting an academic criteria.

State aid would depend on the criteria for you state.
