How much in outside scholarships did everyone get thus far?

Just wondering if my measly collection of scholarships (totaled at $800) is good or not...

i’ve applied to tons and i’ve gotten $1500 (one, from the business professional women in my town). i’m a finalist for another (1000) and i’m still keeping up hope.
good luck :D

My DD was at $7500 before attending Graduation tonight…
$3,000 Sam Walton Foundation
$2,500 APIASF/Coca Cola
$1,000 SC Elks Association
$1,000 Ronald McDonald House Charities

She won 2 local scholarships tonight
$5,000/per yr ($20,000)
$3,000 one-time
For a new total of $30,500 !! Yes, I cried and am still in shock
Take Care,
Lisa

My son also applied for many, many scholarships, both on-line through fastweb and also through local organizations. He only won one $750 award that was non-renewable. His best scholarship offers, by far, were merit scholarships offered through the colleges he applied to. They were all multiple thousands per year and renewable for all 4 years.

swicks2011–Congratulations to your daughter! May I ask what, in general, were her stats? I think it would be helpful to those interested in outside scholarships to know whether that kind of result is only available to the very cream of the crop or whether substantial awards can be secured by those who are not, say, HYPSM material.

Hi!

Not Sure what you mean by her stats but here’s her profile if that helps:

ACT: 27
SAT: 1100
GPA: 3.633
Weighted GPA: 4.551
Class Rank: 14 of 205
Honors Classes: 10
AP Classes: 3 (2 on Exams - Not a Test Taker)
Dual Enrollment Classes: 11

ExtraCurricular:
Varsity Volleyball (Captain)
NHS (Treasurer)
Beta
Science Olympiad (SC State Champion)
Girl Scouts (Gold Award)
Girls State Delegate
Youth Group

Scholarships:
Applied: 60 (1 wk during school year, 5 wk during school/holiday break)
Still Pending: 22
SC Life Merit Scholarship ($27,500)
Local Scholarships ($23,000)
National Scholarships ($7,500)
Withrop Heritage Merit Scholarship ($1,500)

Aid:
Works: 1yr Part-Time 25 hrs per week
EFC: 0
Pell Grant ($5,500)

Had Already Accepted But Will Now Decline:
Work Study ($1,200)
Fed SEOG ($500)

Winthrop COA: $ 23,986

What Other stats would help?

Take Care,
Lisa

okay… I just wanted to compare. I am going to an Ivy League school (costs muchos dinero… idk Spanish) and I got only 1 scholarship out of the lot I applied for…

swicks2011

I wouldn’t reject the SEOG (it is a grant and doesn’t have to be repaid). But before you do anything I would check with her college to see how the “outside” scholarships will be applied. Every school treats them a little differently and your financial aid package from the school may be revised since your “need” has changed due to all the scholarships your D has won. The school cannot award over the COA. BUT - you can get the COA adjusted (did they include books, travel, a new computer - if needed?). I HIIGHLY recommend that you check with the financial aid office before you reject portions of your package. Good luck!

So far S has received a big fat goose-egg. We didn’t find anywhere near 60 that he was eligible for though. (White male, middle-class, parents went to college, unexceptional community service.) He’s applied for fewer than 20 I think. Most of them haven’t been decided yet. I figure he’ll get a few hundred maybe from local scholarships, but don’t have too much hope for him getting anything substantial. Excellent test scores, GPA, class rank, NM Finalist (ended up turning down the schools where he would have gotten substantial merit for that and did not get one of the non-school-based scholarships), average ECs and community service. So far not one penny in outside scholarships.

Why would she decline SEOG? It is a grant.

Hi!

Because it is Need-Based & the available funds are very limited it will be the first to go…

I expect they will take the WS too

What I meant was we had accepted them but I know they’ll take that away & the WS.

It made me mad when she finally got the 27 on ACT for an extra $500 in Merit Scholarship they took $500 of SEOG away so she didn’t get anything for all those attempts at the 27…

I love her admissions counselor but the FA Dept & me are not so good… I just felt they should have taken it from the Loan Offers… Which We have rejected
Thanks!
Lisa

swicks2011,

How does a student boost their GPA by almost a whole point with only 3 AP classes? My son, who had a 4.0 UW GPA could only end up with a 4.26 with 5 AP classes (all A’s).

Every school does GPA differently. Don’t worry about it.

In our high school the maximum weighted GPA possible is 4.1 and you can only get that if you only ever took AP classes and got 100% in all of them. If you got 95% in every class and 3/4 of them were honors and 1/4 AP you’d end up with a weighted GPA of 3.93 at our HS.

I still don’t see how it’s possible. Even assuming AP or honors classes gave you a 1.0 boost a student with a 4.0 UW GPA would need around 11 such classes to attain a 4.5 GPA. It would be impossible for a 3.6 UW student.

If honors and AP classes give a 1.0 boost and virtually every class is honors or AP…

The dual enrollment classes may have a GPA boost.

Well She had 11 Dual Enrollment Classes (+1 Lab) taken at the local college which is actual college credit versus potential college credit like AP offers. I don’t know how that all works but I would guess that would account for it?

When I realized Dual Enrollments were actual college credit fully transferable (depending on which ones you take) instead of pending a test we chose all of them over the hopes of her doing a 3 or better on an AP test. We had to have the college send their transcript to the college where she is going to get those credits transferred even though they are also on her HS transcript. Also she graduated with a total of 35 1/2 HS credits, They actually ran out of Math classes for her to take… We kept her schedule fully loaded with only required classes & not the extras they tend to slip in during 9th & 10th grade. and she took summer APPEX classes too

The only class she needed her senior year was 1 unit of English because they wouldn’t let her take that ahead of the time. Instead of taking it easy she took ENG 101 & ENG 102 plus a full schedule of other classes rather then taking early release/late arrival that most of her friends did…

Here is her class load if it helps figure it out…

Does that explain it?
Also her GPA didn’t go a full point? She has a 3.63/4.55

I would think Dual Enrollment should because they are the actual college classes she took at the college rather than AP being possibly… I had to by the college textbooks - OUCH!
