How much income is too much for an EFC of 0?

I’m specifically asking here because I know sometimes the university itself might request you pay despite what FAFSA says.
Anyway, I got a job and would be making around $10,000 a year. My family’s current EFC is 0, and I have the HAIL scholarship (need based scholarship). I have no idea if $10,000 is a lot in the university’s eyes… do you think my FA might change?

Im calling the FA office tomorrow, but I’m really stressed right now.

Why don’t you plug it into the NPC? It is unrealistic to think you will earn $10K during the school year ; perhaps you could during the summer and school year combined.

Remember your 2017 income will affect only your 2019-2020 financial aid.

The Hail Scholarship covers all 4 years of tuition. Living expenses would not be covered but loans, grants from UM, and your job should give you more than enough to pay for this. How are Hail Scholars chosen? I know someone who was accepted on this with way lower stats than what UM usually requires. I’m guessing they may know income levels from the reduced lunch program, but am really confused how it works. It’s a great deal for those who get it!

@riverbirch According to my guidance counselor, they look for students in the free/reduced lunch programs who are “competitive.” “Competitive” meaning they stand a chance at admission. Using me and my friend as an example, I was above the University’s averages, while my friend was just under their averages. Both got in, both got the scholarship.

It is completely NOT based on merit.

Ok if parent income is $25,000 or under and you have another qualifier like free/reduced lunch, then auto zero EFC would apply. Assets and student income would not be considered on the FAFSA then.

For people who don’t qualify for auto zero EFC, the EFC would depend on parent income and household size, number in college, student income, and possibly parent and student assets.

I am well aware that the Hail Scholarship is not based on merit. Thanks for clarifying how the Hail Scholar kids are picked since my best guess was that they have to go by the free/reduced lunch program. I believe the ones below the University’s averages are given a leg up when they apply through the Hail Scholarship application. This gal I know who qualified for the scholarship was also offered free tutoring in all her classes which should help her succeed. The scholarship is very generous and anyone who receives the packet in the mail should apply if they are interested in going to Michigan. I’m surprised I haven’t read more about it on CC.
