How much is alot of financial aid?

Hi, I just checked my Fordham University Financial Aid package and they awarded me about $16,500 for each semester.

Fall Undergraduate
Federal Pell Grant Estimate $2,700.00
Federal SEOG Grant $500.00
NYS TAP Grant Fall Estimate $2,500.00
Fordham Jogues Scholarship $3,500.00 --Jogues Scholarship-This awar...
Fordham Grant in Aid $4,500.00
Federal Direct Stafford Subsidized Loan $1,750.00
Federal Direct Stafford Unsub Loan $1,000.00

This is the same for the Spring Semester too. Now I have no idea what these numbers mean so what do you guys think of this? My EFC for my FAFSA was 00000. Also if possible can anyone tell me about how much I should be expected to pay? Thanks.

That’s an excellent scholarship!

You are expected to pay for the remaining tuition and housing.

Does anybody know if the grant money is fixed for four years? I’m self-employed so my income can vary greatly from year to year. My D was offered some pretty decent grants, but I’m concerned they will take them away if my business has a good year.

You redo the FAFSA every year, so if you have a good year, it will definitely have an impact. OP, this is pretty good, if you can come up with the other 21K. Otherwise not so much.

OP, based on your EFC ($0), your financial aid package, and a $55k annual cost of attendance at Fordham, you have $22k of unmet need. This will be the amount that you will be expected to pay per year. The Stafford loans will leave you with $27k in loans upon graduation and depending on how you pay for the add’l $22k/yr, your debt could be well over $100k. ‘How much is alot’ is different for every individual. If the $22k can be easily paid by you and your parents, then your financial aid is alot. If this amount is impossible to pay, then financial aid is not alot.

Pnw - the scholarship is the only thing that is fixed for 4 yrs (the Jogues requires you maintain a 2.75 GPA). The rest is all based on FAFSA.

Good luck to all in making your college choices.

If the OP is planning to commute, then the package should cover most of the costs, if the OP is planning to live on campus, it looks to me there is a bit less than $20,000/year which would have to be paid by the family. The prior poster is right, “a lot” of financial aid is a relative term. Every family needs to figure out their situation and decide what they can afford to pay for college.

@DadOf3Sons (or anyone who might know)

My D received a decent chunk of money but they only referred to it as “gift” aid. Do you know if that is fixed (scholarship)?

^^^Definitely speak with a FA counselor and ask if and how this package could change from year to year! If you are going to an accepted students day program, you will get the opportunity to meet with someone which we found very helpful last year.

@PnW - the gift aid is not fixed. It is determined each year based on your financial need. If your circumstances do not change much you can probably expect something at or near this but it is not guaranteed. My son did receive a Jogues Scholarship which was specifically listed in the aid letter. This particular scholarship requires a minimum of a 2.75 GPA to automatically renew annually.
