How much need based aid requirements hurts in college admission for a top ORM student?

^^I thought her two older kids got into Harvard which is need-blind for admission.

@annamom

Yes they did go to Harvard…or Yale…but my point is…this kid is likely applying to need blind schools also.

So what really ismthe difference between sisters 1 and 2, and this sister…except that the parent has a $15,000 EFC which wasn’t there with those first two kids.

There is NO disadvantage for, this kid relative to her siblings…because this kid is likely also applying to need blind schools.

And if her sisters got acceoted to any need aware schools with $0 EFC, then this kid is in better shape than they were.

TBH…I’m not sure what the OP wants to know or hear. She was able to post her kids excellent stats here for all to see…maybe that was her goal.

This kid will have college options…and the private prep, school will make sure that happens!

OP, I dont know if anyone has already posted these links to scholarship info, which was compiled by CC parents, but IF your DD is a NMSF [ she had to take the PSAT and qualify based on her state], she will have MANY colleges that will offer her scholarships.
If she did not take the PSAT, you need $$ to be able to afford to send her to college, then you will have to cast a wide net.

This is an updated collection of scholarships…

But I am pretty sure the OP is looking ONLY at elite colleges which don’t give merit aid.

I think if you follow the steps of what happymomof1 set out…this will relief you of some anxiety. Many of us have this and this is why we are here on this forum. I know that now I know we have our acceptance to a financial safety, there is less stress and unknown which cause any person anxiety. Now, it is more fun to explore options.

“But I am pretty sure the OP is looking ONLY at elite colleges which don’t give merit aid.”

That would be a mistake in this hyper competitive day and age- throwing all the eggs in one basket, especially if $$ is needed…
what if she is rejected or WL’d everywhere?

let’s not for get what happened to Andi’s son- see below

“There is NO disadvantage for, this kid relative to her siblings…because this kid is likely also applying to need blind schools.”

Unless the EFC is actually a lot less than 15K, don’t know what the issue is. However every applicant is different so we don’t know the relative positioning of the three siblings, and even though the EFC was 0 for them, they may have been in a better position wrt the top schools. As we’re discussing on another thread, need blind should be taken with a grain of salt. The fact that half the students don’t get FA and 70% of students at top schools are upper middle income or higher, there’s some level of awareness going on.

“TBH…I’m not sure what the OP wants to know or hear. She was able to post her kids excellent stats here for all to see…maybe that was her goal.”

Shocking, parents bragging about their kids’ accomplishments, that never happens!

Sorry busy, that is why did not reply.

Why do I need to brag? I never declared my kids grade or star except when people asked.

Our third child when applied to prep school, was wait listed every where except one prep school, when I called other prep schools, answer was need became an issue as prep school wanted to protect their yield and were not sure if our third kid will mayriculate. Since then it has been on my mind that this can happen in college.

We are very thankful that she was admitted to a great school

Our major concern is daughter is no more math and science child, she has done exceedingly well in all subject’s and is not sure what she wants to pursue, she is considering out of state public school as they are good in computer science, but she wants her major option open, creating more hurdle as we are running NPC in many school

Last year one of her friend who is ORM and very high math achiever has hard time as he was wait listed many great places. Kid has high need bases need, yes prep school got him into one great place in CS but it has made us aware that despite high scores nothing can be taken for granted.

If you look my other thread I am not talking about YOU but CS schools that are great for CS

Just for the record, ALL schools protect yield.

I hope you meant “our state school” because if not, only 2-3 in the whole country will meet financial need for out of state students and I believe both are also need-aware.

@LoveTheBard

Thanks for the input, love it.

@OHMomof2 She indeed has a true safety and some matches also under considerations.

Look into what holistic admissions means.
And what her college targets will look for and want in applicants.

She’s not applying to another prep. What the preps required, said, or did is behind you now.

You have got to become informed about what the college targets look for, not hs, and not what mattered when the siblings applied.

And rather than anyone spinning their wheels over need blind, what you guess it means, just accept it. All this fuss about it distracts from what it really takes to put out a good app and supps for a top college. You don’t just send in a resume and wait for the Yes.

As it is, in their hs choices and then their applications, too many kids miss what really matters. They diminish their own chances.
