How much of a problem is smoking at your school?

This habit has become all too common nowadays. By smoking, I mean in all its forms, whether Shisha/Hookah, cigarettes, cigars etc. I can see 8th graders starting to smoke cigarettes, unaware that nicotine may very well be the most addictive drug there is, after cocaine and heroine. I can't seem to wrap my mind around the notion that states that smoking is "cool." Nonetheless, it's spreading as a habit among teenagers like a forest fire. Am I the only one who notices this disgusting habit gaining too much ground nowadays among people who smoke it just for appearance? Why is it done, regardless of the numerous negative effects? Is it a problem at your school?

It’s a huge problem at my school, along with drugs and girls getting pregnant! It used to be that our school was known for not having lots of that stuff going on, but that’s definitely changed. I’m glad I’m a senior, so I can get out of here before it gets way worse.

Among juniors and seniors and is relatively common, lower down the school only a few people do it, and (along with drugs) mostly only at parties. We’re a girls school in a very wealthy area, so people know the dangers of it, they often take it up to be social or because they think it helps them lose weight.

Yeah, all the people who drive by see all the kids smoking, hence why teenagers have the bad rep. See, my high school is up on a hill conveniently located right next to a McDonald
s, a huge parking lot, and Burger King. People cross the street, walk behind the Burger King: Drugs there. You get down to the big parking lot: All the rednecks and goth kids park their cars/trucks and light up. There
s a “No Loitering” sign but they litter the ground with cigarette butts, trash, and who know what else. It
s pretty rough for those who just want to go to McDonald
s after school to hang out with friends.

So that`s why people thing teenagers are bad; the good ones never are out in the parking lot for all to see.

It
s known to be dangerous crossing behind the Burger King, especially after the main group of people have gone down to the parking lot/McDonald
s…no joke, I hear they sell and do drugs down there. They need to have a 24/7 cop there.

Well maybe 20% of the school does pot. I’ll hear about a lot of pot use. It’s of a thing where if you don’t do, then you think it’s wrong. (Which from a legal standpoint it is.) I, besides from thinking the smell’s disgusting and it’s illegal dont judge people for it. I have friends that smoke, but I’d never wanna be around them while theyre smoking/high.

Cigarette’s one the other hand, everyone is dead set against. Less than 1% of the school smokes cigarettes. Everyone thinks it’s terrible and gets angry if anyone offers it to them. Only the real “gangsta kids” lol do.

Drinking is definetely the majority. Just from what I’ve heard im guessing 80% do it. Almost every one of my friends drinks. I, along with everyone in the school have no issue with it. While I’d never do it in HS, and no one tries to force you, I wouldnt mind being around people while drinking if there was no chance of getting caught. You’d really be surprised that smart kids do it to. Out of last year’s top 10, the 6 of them that I knew all drank.

Smoking Weed is a bigger issue than smoking cigarettes. Some idiots smoke in the bathroom.

@goodnoodle

My school is like that, the majority of drug users are pot users. I would say that the number of cigarette users is nearly nonexistent and drinking isn’t as prevalent as your school, though it does happen frequently.

Usually people don’t offer drugs to you at my school. Every year one or two seniors gets busted for selling pot though.

^Speaking of drinking, there
s a rumor going around that apparently there was some party and some seniors seniors on our football team, might I add) got drunk and there might be some pending charges against them. Gee, that
ll make my school`s rep look real good, especially considering we have a really good football team, and some of these seniors have chances for scholarships to play college ball.

By 10th grade, almost everyone drinks here, but for the majority it’s only on occasion. I’m the only one of my friends who doesn’t. To be fair though, it is legal once you’re 18 here

Haha Pandemic has a pandemic! My school has a gianormous population of pot smokers and drinkers. It’s come to the point where you assume someone does that unless they say they don’t. Very few people don’t do either and a majority of those are the smart smart kids, but still a few. My school is rampant with pregnant girls too. It really sad. The amount of preggos have gone down and the pot smokers either go two directions. They become hard core druggies or smoke occassionally. Same with drinking. But the pot smokers are really nice I have to say.

“But the pot smokers are really nice I have to say.” ^^ Ha, that made me laugh out loud that was so funny! :D

I think if anyone got pregnant at my school they would mysteriously spend half a year on holiday. That or be the talk of the school for the next decade.

Hmm, barely at our school, actually. Might be because it’s only 4 years old. The majority of people at my school are Indian/Asian and want to go to an Ivy League school, so they spend all of their extra time studying for the SAT or something, not smoking. Last year, some guy got caught with pot in the boy’s bathroom and literally EVERYBODY was talking about it. So basically, somebody smoking/drinking/with drugs is pretty big news at our school. We’re all good kids haha. But it is kind of nice because it makes everyday life a bit more interesting. It gets boring going to a school where the most exciting thing that happens is somebody getting a detention.

If anybody got pregnant at my school, the press would arrive and announce a medical anomaly.

There are so many pregnant girls at my school. I used to be best friends with one of them. Her baby is adorable and looks just like her.

Yep there’s a pregnancy epidemic at my school.

And by 80% drinkers I mean occasional drinkers. Very few people drink regularly. It’s mostly at parties.

Not really a problem at my school, a few of the dumbasses smoke weed, but 95% of my grade (fr0sh) in my school dont smoke/drink/or do drugs

@goodnoodle, you probably go to a large public school don’t you? Because at my school, my freshman year we had a game to cout how many pregnant girls you could count inbetween each class. I got to 12 and friend won with 16. Thats sad. :frowning: It’s gotten better and worse through hs.

It’s pretty bad. My school actually used to be known for its heroin use, but now the hard drug use has decreased quite a bit. That being said, everyone and their mother smokes and drinks.

Smoking sucks. I should know. It all started in 8th grade. I was a pretty good kid. I was well behaved and got good grades, but my social life was lacking. I had only 2 “close” friends and was desperate for more. I was especially desperate for a boyfriend. Being gay and in the closet made that difficult though. That’s when I decided to take my search to the internet.

I met a 20 year old guy on a chat room. Little did I know this would be the biggest mistake of my life. He wasn’t really anything special now that I realize it, but he thought I was special. He would tell me he loved me and pretty soon I said I loved him. We would be talking for hours and hours each day. I started to become dependent on him.

When I wasn’t talking to him, I was waiting to talk to him, yet when we talked, we always ended up arguing and fighting. Pretty soon I spiraled into depression. He made me feel bad, but I still wanted to be with him. Now eventually he ended our “relationship” because things got too complex, but I was left an emotional wreck. To deal with the stress and pain I took up smoking.

At the time I thought there was nothing wrong with it. I knew cigarettes were bad for you, but at the time I didn’t care about the consequences. Bad move. Before I knew it I was smoking more and more. It doesn’t hurt that I found out about other kids smoked in my neighborhood (at the time a 6th and 7th grader) and we would a smoke together.

I completely regret all of it. My “need” for a boyfriend led me to almost fail 8th grade and smoking. Now I’m a freshman trying to change himself for the better (I’m getting great grades, being more social), but I still smoke daily. Around half a pack (10 cigs) a day and it’s been about 10 months. I don’t even like cigarettes anymore. They taste awful and sometimes make me gag, but I’m addicted to them. I’m afraid of what they’re doing to me, but I don’t know how to quit. Moral of the story? Just don’t smoke. It’s that easy. if you don’t start, you won’t get addicted.
