How much of an advantage is it to not apply for Financial Aid from Brown? Does it give you a significant edge?

From what I understand no, it doesn't matter whether you ask for aid or not.

They are need-aware; however, I am not sure how significantly it affects the decision.

slight advantage (possibly a 4 on a scale of 1-10)

Brown switched to need blind admissions an admissions cycle or two ago. Applying for financial aid will make no difference whatsoever in your chances of admission. You better believe "Ruthie"--the Brown U prez--is enforcing that. Brown also doesn't require any work -study from freshman on financial aid. It wants to give you time to make the transition, so no work is required until sophomore year.

Jonri, yes, they are need-blind for freshman admissions, but not for transfer admissions. Look to the website; they admit to being "need-aware." Although my opinion is most likely worthless, I'd say you're financial need is a large factor, but still behind things like college GPA. It could be as important as, say, your essay. But what do I know.
