I used to think they had some importance till I realized… Harvard is ranked second.

Honestly, the distinction between first and second. There are reasonable arguments to be made that Princeton is academically superior to Harvard and vice versa. The difference, if there is any, is so minute that it can be safely ignored. I don’t think the rankings difference between UChicago, Northwestern, and Georgetown is any more significant.

if they’re only like 20 off each other whatever.. maybe what are you majoring in? then the better program might be best.

from what my friends say Northwest > UChic (campus wise)

The rankings are for US News what the soft porn swimsuit issue is for Sports Illustrated. A great money making scam. Pls dont be naive and make a life altering decision over rankings. There are basically 50 great schools in America and 150 good schools. Figure out what makes you happy and pick the best one that MATCHES you. My college roommate got his PhD at Yale and flatly stated he would send his kids to a school like W&M or Davidson for the undergrad over new haven. I have a Harvard alum friend that said he would have gotten a much better education at Swarthmore.

Dont make your college decision with high school logic. Good luck.

And it’s an open question as to which one of them gets stared at more.

Yea dont pick a college by rankings. Pick for fit. FIT IS MOST IMPORTANT. You don’t wanna go to Stanford if you hate sports and hot weather. You don’t wanna go to Chicago if you hate lengthy academic discussions and wintry weather. FITTT
