How much time should I expect to spend on CS61A with Hilfinger alone?

How long will his projects usually take? How much time does he give you? And how bad is it when there are no projects due?

Thanks!

His projects for 61B usually took around 50-80 hours, depending on how fast you work and how experienced you are.

It actually varies according to your current level of programming experience.

For me, the first couple of weeks were pretty tough, since I had no prior programming experience. And then from there on, I was regularly putting in around 18 hours a week with a couple of extra hours during exams. Try to stay ahead in readings and do the discussion notes religiously. And as all CS classes say, get started on the projects ASAP. :)

Thanks for the feedback! In terms of grades, how hard is it to get an A- in this class? How much were the projects/exams worth?

I worked my ass off for an A, but that’s mostly because I came in with no programming experience.
There isn’t much of a difference between an A and an A- since the scale is really cramped in the range for an A. Out of a total of 300 points, for an A+ you need 283+ points, an A is at 276-282 points and an A- is 269-275 points.
The 300 points were broken up as follows:
Two midterms, each worth 50 points.
One final exam, worth 80 points.
Four projects, worth a total of 90+ points (bonuses available)
Homework and participation, worth a total of 30 points

Also, if you get some heads up on Python before coming in for the spring semester, you should be good imho.
