How much to charge tutoring - ivy league grad?

Agree with @thumper1. Once you can say “the teen I tutored scored xxx on the SAT practice test, and after xx months of tutoring scored xxx” then you can start charging the big bucks. I know a young tutor who parlayed her experience into a career. She now home schools two teens whose multi-millionaire parents don’t want the family to be tied to a school schedule. This young woman teaches the humanities; another tutor does math and science. The latter is an MIT grad, she graduated with honors from Vassar. Both earn over $80,000 per year, and travel the world with the family. Last I heard they were in the South of France for several months, tutors in tow, of course, and all expenses paid.

Location and reputation matter. One of my lads makes $100+/hour tutoring anything from basic chem to MCAT when he has time. He had too full of a schedule so raised his prices only to find more demand, not less. Apparently many folks feel the more you charge the better you are, but then again, his reviews also show he’s a good tutor so I doubt one can start by charging that much. He’s not an Ivy grad. I don’t think that would make a difference at all. It’s his accomplishments and abilities folks are looking for.

When I tutor I almost always help kids for free, but I know my area and know people really can’t afford to pay. I just want to see the kids be able to do better by helping them fill in some gaps. They’re also either kids I know or kids of parents I know.

And I’m still curious about how you’re an “HYP” grad. That’s 3 different schools-- did you graduate from all 3?

@bjkmom The OP said “from a HYP undergrad” which is code for a top school (or specifically Havard, Yale, Princeton) but still being able to remain anonymous as to which one. OP isn’t trying to infer they graduated from all 3.

I understand the acronym. I’m just not sure why it’s important for the school to remain anonymous if you’re trying to cash in on the school you attended.

the OP is doing online tutoring which I imagine would less than a 1-1 via face to face right?

@bjkmom --presumably the OP will tell the people who hires them. The acronym tells us the level of information necessary. What does it matter if the particular school is named here or not?

agree this largely depends on location…
