K, I'll be applying to Andover, Exeter, Hotchkiss, SPS, Loomis Chafee, Lawrenceville, Choate, Deerfield and maybe Taft as a senior fall of 2011.

People have told me I should contact the coaches of the sports I play to let them know I'm interested...

I'm really new to sports (Lacrosse, Cycling, Track, Cross Country, Badminton) but I've won several times in cycling and cross country. Andover and Exeter I heard are interested in athletes. But I don't suppose being "new" matters as long as you're good and have a couple of awards and wins....I'm interested in joining athletic teams, so I'm thinking of contacting the coaches by e-mail and let them know I'm interested.

First just to make your whole process easier I would narrow your schools down to around 5 or less because doing 9 applications is going to take up a lot of your time

and if your main sport is cycling (this may sound weird but it worked for me)
1st find the schools that have cycling
2nd out of those, find the school that is the WORST in it, because that means they’ll want more cyclist like you!

and contacting the coached is a great idea, and just in your application make sure “new” doesn’t mean that you’re not good!
hope i helped!

Sorry for leaving the forum, the server was down for some reason and I didn’t have the chance to get back until now…Just to be safe, I think having 8 safety schools would be a good idea…

What if I have repeated for example my junior prior to applying, can I still apply as a repeat junior? Or should I just continue to my senior year?

I would really advise you to update your list to some less competitive schools. As an applicant who is applying as a senior, your chances are gonna be really slim - I believe Andover only accepts around 20 seniors, while some of the other schools you listed, mainly Taft, only accept 5. You should think about adding maybe Kent, Blair, or Peddie. Those are just slightly less competitive. Or maybe NMH. Yes, you do come from Canada but that just isn’t rare enough. You also play some sports, but that’s not going to help much either. Are you going to be needing FA - cause that tends to change ones chances? Anyways, that’s just my advice to you Hope it helps. :)

In the end it’s what’s between the ears that counts. As for any of the schools you listed, there are rarely openings for Seniors much less even 5. The 20 and 5 numbers would be more for Juniors and again that’s if there are that many openings. Now they may have bounced a few sophomores out of St. George’s this past year but they don’t have cycling as a sport. Some of the kids will do whatever they can to reapply and get back in. One more year where your are now may be your best bet. Good luck.

Depending on the sport and how good you are at it (could you be an impact varsity player on the ice hockey/football/lacrosse/soccer, etc. team) certainly does make a difference.
