How much will being an athletic recruit help in the admissions process?

I'm a junior and Vassar is my top choice. I'm a hurdler and I've spoken with the head track coach about running for Vassar. I haven't been recruited yet because I haven't filled out the recruit questionnaire. However, I highly anticipate that I will be.

To give you an idea of why, Vassar's school record in the 110m hurdles is 18.65. I run in the high 15's.

However, I feel like it may not help very much at Vassar because of the lack of a focus on athletics. Am I right? I'm also applying early decision.

My older brother was an athlete at Vassar. He wasn’t recruited, but he picked it up while a freshman. However, judging from his teammates, it seems as though being a recruit does give people a boost. Saying that though, I’m assuming you’re also qualified academically, even if you’re not an academic all-star. Also, your hurdle time seems fantastic in comparison to the school, so the coach will probably make a big push for you.

Vassar is NCAA Div III, that means it doesnt recruit student athlete. Students can jump into vasity sports here. If you look at the athletic stats of Vassar it’s actually pretty decent. I guess it would depends on the sports you play and if the coach is desperately in need of new blood for the team

Just because Vassar is Div 3, doesn’t mean they do not recruit. It only means they can’t off athletic scholarships. Also, depending on the size of the school, there may not be a large budget allocated to recruiting. If that is the case, most of it is likely done via phone calls and email, rather than things like in-home visits by head or assistant coaches.

Vassar definitely recruits. Coaches can bolster applications. They will advocate for you, but they aren’t going to be pulling miracles.

By advocate, you mean that they mention that they want you.

Lets get right down to it folks. Vassar has great athletics, but we’re best for our academics. Thats why people go to our school. ACADEMICS. If you don’t have it, you dont get in. Vassar loves kids that do sports, theater, community service, or any other sort of extra-curricular. As far as that goes, its a major win. But if you don’t have the grades to come here, there is NOTHING the coaches can do for you. Playing a sport here will not help with your admission.

However, if you want to play a sport, there are TONS of opportunities. As i mentioned above, we have fun, talented sports teams, and while many of them are dominated by recruits, I also know a lot of people on teams who were walk ons. That’s the beauty of vassar.

OP, you sound amazing, and as a fellow hurdler, I totally support you coming here, but just make sure YOU HAVE THE GRADES TO GET IN. Because you can’t rely on athletics in any way to get in here.

Im also a vassar recruit, and i can say coaches can help you if they want you. the coach im talking to has already expressed a lot of interest in me, i visited campus and spoke with him over springbreak, and he said they can help you get in, but after that youre fully expected to pull your academic load at the school
