I’ve consistently had B+s in English since freshmen year. I had a B+ in Honors English, 9th and 10th grade, and I had a B+ in AP English lang. I’ve had straight As in all my math and science classes, and the lowest grade I’ve had is a C+ in AP world history, though I ended up getting a 5 on the AP world history exam.(He was one of the hardest teachers in the school. A C+ was considered an accomplishment in that class.) Aside from English and World History, I’ve consistently had an A- and above in everything else. This year, I have As every class, even having an A+ in AP Calculus currently, but my grade in AP English Lit is a B. Will a semester grade of a B in English hurt my chances into getting into top schools like Carnegie Mellon, Cornell, or MIT? and what about other schools? I don’t think I have much of a problem in understanding the language as I got 1470 on the SAT, a 770 for English and 700 for math. I scored 70 points higher in English than in Math. I’ve consistently scored higher in the English section of the PSAT and the SAT compared to my Math as well.
It really depends on how your low grades affect your gpa and class rank. Is your school known for being difficult?
But in general, yeah, it will hurt your admissions chances to schools like MIT unless you have really impressive ecs.
I’m within the top 5% of my Class, and my unweighted GPA is around a 3.8, and my weighted GPA is a 4,22
I wouldn’t say my school is known for being overly difficult. I also wouldn’t say my ECs are impressive, but I believe my application essays were pretty good
While I don’t think you’ll get into MIT, Cornell and Carnegie Mellon are both possible, though I hope you applied to matches and safeties.
