How necessary is an optional essay?

<p>I'm applying to U Chicago and was wondering what the effects of not doing this essay on my chances would be:</p>

<p>Share with us a few of your favorite books, poems, authors, films, plays, pieces of music, musicians, performers, paintings, artists, blogs, magazines, or newspapers. Feel free to touch on one, some, or all of the categories listed, or add a category of your own.</p>

<p>Why would you not take this chance to show a side of you not revealed elsewhere? I would view it as somewhat lazy and/or as a lack of genuine interest. </p>

<p>“Optional” means “mandatory” at top schools like U of C. My kid did the essay… and got in. Sample size of one, but I wouldn’t skip it. But go for something a little unusual (my kid did).</p>

<p>I am just confused about how in depth or general to go on this. Do I talk about one that I love a lot, or just make a list? Both dont seem like the right answer</p>
