How often are kids nudged out of the class they want to take?

All courses in general to Intro classes to specific seminars.

generally it only happens to freshman trying to get into really popular econ classes and sometimes people have trouble getting into intro language classes for languages like spanish, which are intentionally kept small. I think in general people mostly get the classes they want, except certain popular capped gov and econ classes. Actually, I have more of a problem not getting the pe classes I want than the regular classes I want. I’ve never not gotten an academic class, but yoga fills up fast!

Even if you don’t initially get into a class, you can usually get in if you come to the first day of class and are persistent, since all you usually need is instructor approval (prereqs notwithstanding), and profs like to have eager students in the class.

As for PE, registration is first-come first-serve, and it’s done online. I’ve never had any trouble as long as I’ve kept refreshing the registration page until 8:00am on the dot on the first day of PE registration and then registering the instant after registration begins.

I just reread the OP’s question. Seminars are a bit more complicated. You don’t register using the normal system (if I recall correctly); instead you rank your top 4 seminar preferences. I think I got my 3rd or 4th choice. Again, though: with persistence, sometimes you can convince the professor of your 1st choice seminar to let you in… I had at least one friend who did that.

To clarrify, the above is for freshman seminars and writing 5…that is not how upper level seminars work.

Ah, yes. Thanks, Green99.
