How prestigious is Amherst really?

I know it is a great school, but how presitigous is it:

in the NE?

everywhere else in the US?

I know taht I want to live in the West or the South when I am older? Will noone know about Amherst?

It doesn't really matter whether people "know about" it or not - you'll get a great education. If they don't know about it, you can just tell them it's the most selective LAC in the country and that should shut them up.

Almost as prestigious as Penn =P

[--------------------This Prestigious--------------------]

But seriously, those in education know what Amherst is. The layman may not necessarily know about it, but that's not such a big problem. If somebody says they've never heard of it, just tell them what my sophomore precal teacher, who grew up 20 minutes away from Amherst, told me about it: "They call it 'Little Harvard.'"

And for good reason.

A friend is a dean at MIT, and when I told her D was deciding between different schools, one of them being Amherst, she said, "You have to let her go there - it's a mini-ivy!" Ask any of the following people: the Prince of Monaco, Dan Brown, Dr. Drew, relative of Pres of El Salvador, etc., and the list goes on. People. It's known where it needs to be.

There's a new housing development in my neighborhood named Amherst. The local Indian tribe is protesting they don't want something built on what had been their land named after a genocidal murderer.

(I think they would have preferred "Dahmer Commons".)

Great school. No one out here has ever heard of it. (Same with my alma mater - go Ephs.) If I had to choose again, I'd go to Amherst (though it would be my second choice after Earlham.)

Have fun deciding!

mini-Why Amherst over Williams?

mini: why Earlham though?

"mini-Why Amherst over Williams?"

FOR ME, much better location, better language departments, more offerings through the five-colleges, fewer athletes. Might not be for all.

"mini: why Earlham though?"

FOR ME, Better integration of study abroad into the larger context of the curriulum, more one-on-one interactions with faculty, dry(ish) campus, weekly all-campus colloquia (every Wednesday), more social awareness/social action integrated with studies, much more economically diverse student body, and I'm a Quaker. (If it was on the east coast, it would BE unique, and not many of us could get in - I suggested to them once that they call their Indiana campus their foreign exchange program, and buy some land in Vermont. ;))

They've heard of Amherst out here at Stanford and Cal. :-)
