Hi, I’m a sophomore in high school, and I’ve been looking into possible college options. Currently I have a 3.97 weighted GPA, and am currently taking 2 APS, and in high school as a whole have taken 2APs and 6Honors. After looking into UMich, (as my uw is a 3.6 which is too low), as a reasonable reach school, I stumbled upon U Of Texas- Austin, as a possibility. As someone who is looking for either a science or law major (absolutely no clue, I know they’re very different). I was wondering whether or not that school would be fitting for an out-of-state student looking for those majors. Thanks!
It’s an excellent school, but it’s very hard to get into as an OOS student. Also very expensive - they give very little aid to out of staters. My son (OOS) had excellent stats and received only $1,000/year.
If you have the grades and the means (coming from OOS), I would highly recommend it. Texas is a great academic university with strong programs in most fields. The engineering programs are very competitive, but I will tell you they don’t have a “law” undergraduate degree. Their law school is very well respected, however, and if that is the route you think you want to go, I’d recommend applying to the Plan II Honors program as an undergraduate, which would be great preparation for law school.
In addition to the school, Austin is an absolutely wonderful place to live. So much to do for a college student, and as an adult, with a thriving post-graduate job market. Again, can’t recommend enough. Good luck to you.
UT Austin is cutthroat for out of state residents. If you live in Michigan, you have the grades for Michigan State, which is still a major top tier university.
