How safe would you feel if you were returning to your dorm at midnight? Are there a lot of muggings?

Midnight? I've walked by to my dorm in all temperatures at all times of night in all states of drunkeness. Now, I'm not at risk for being sexually assaulted, but I've never been mugged or anything.

Plus, if you're a girl it's easy to get guys to walk you back.

And if you're not, you shouldn't be worried.

All of the muggings happen when people are dumb and walk in places with horrible lighting and nobody around.

that's awesome. So unlike NY, where they mug you whatever the lighting is.

I have walked around at 4AM wearing a toga in NYC (Soho) and have not gotten mugged.

Penn is safe as well. Didn't have any problems when I was walking around at around 2AM during my visit(although I was with two other guys). 80% of everyone out during that hour was basically plastered and all looked like college students.

It's not dangerous if you don't count the two people who were shot last year walking around. There are a TON of bums (I think they should be kept out of the Green/Locust Walk), but they're pretty much harmless. Overall, it's pretty safe--there is a LOT of security: armed officers, unarmed private security, emergency phones, bright lights, etc...

And don't forget your rape whistle.

two people were shot?? just randomly?? they weren't students right??

Oh yes, the rape whistle.

Penn has one of the largest private security forces of a University and security is one of the big concerns of Penn. I had the same hesitations about the school but now that I am here I feel really safe, even walking by myself at night. There are always spectraguards roaming around on their bikes and if you ever don't feel safe you can call 898-walk and a spectraguard will walk with you to wherever you need to go.

if youre obviously inebriated will they care/will you get in trouble?

Something they really stressed to us was medical amnesty and Penn's policy on it. It goes something like this "If you're friend is really sick (ie wasted out of their mind) and needs medical attention, if you go to the hospital your friend won't be charged with any disciplinary actions and neither will you.

But if you come to the quad entrance and you can't swipe your card and enter your pin number then the guards will call the cops on you.

seems fair

haha, I've had friends who've swiped ATM cards, insurance cards, everything but Penn cards.

I've never had any trouble. Last week, I walked home alone, plastered, from 44th to 36th st at 2:30 AM, with no problems. When there are incidents, they get so heavily reported on that it makes them seem more frequent than they really are.

One of the two people who were shot was a student, caught in the crossfire of an argument. Another wasn't a student, and the shooting was purposeful.

I should note that these happened on campus grounds--which includes city blocks--not in the College Green or Locust Walk or Hamilton Village.

Explain the rape whistle. What's that all about?

bump :):):)

im a female who's unfortunately small and skinny so people like me would be a good target in many cases... i've felt incredibly safe. the security guard system is SO extensive... walking home at 12, 1am, 2, 3, 4... up to 6 am even is totally fine. i live in the quad so there's always people milling about.

coming from the suburbs, i was worried at first when i arrived at Penn but as soon as night and the first party came around, i saw all that penn does to keep its students (inebriated or not) safe. it really works... just use your common sense and don't wander far, far off campus into sketchy areas (which applies for any urban university) where no one should be wandering at night anyway.

also, i haven't noticed any homeless people around campus... is that just me...

And if you're really worried and don't want to walk alone at night, you can just call a number and ask for an escort from Penn police. It's free.

"How safe is the campus?"

nice link! but you also need to consider the context... a grad student was robbed and killed at the beginning of the year after he arrived on campus... which sounds bad until you realize that he was biking in some obscure, entirely sketchy, one-of-the-most-dangerous-areas far out of the way from campus... alone at night... and then went to an isolated ATM and withdrew money... etc. etc. ... you just don't do that. yeah that last part just cinched the deal and it's sad that he did something so obviously unsafe.
