How SAFE is USC?

I keep hearing that USC is in downtown LA and it is common that students get mugged?

What areas on campus and immediately off campus are safe and not safe?

Great question and it does come up here often. If you don’t get many answers here in your thread, use the Search button above in the blue bar to find lots of old discussions on this.

Don’t go too far south or east alone and you’ll be fine. You can go west but I wouldn’t venture past Normandie. North is generally where most people live and the most DPS officers are present.

The actual campus of USC is VERY safe. I have NEVER felt unsafe ON campus. The same goes for a few blocks off campus as most of it is housing that is occupied by students. Past a few blocks though, it can be a little iffy.

On campus you are almost completely safe. I’ve never heard of anything happening to anyone on campus at any time.

It is in the surrounding area that things happen (mostly muggings). If you’re going off campus, stick with friends if you can, and walk on the busiest streets possible. The most muggings happen on the dark, quiet streets, usually numbered ones especially those west of Vermont Avenue. I go north of campus fairly frequently, and one thing I’ve learned is if your walking includes a westward or eastward movement, do that down the Row, as in instead of walking east down 30th street, go east down 28th. Same for anything else — try to take the way with the most university housing and the most people walking. (University Avenue is a good place to walk because there are no cars. meaning no getaways.)

But yeah, it does happen, but if you are smart you will be fine, and you are always safe on campus.
