<p>JHS, the incidents I described all happened to people I knew well in the course of a single year. That’s a pretty high crime rate, IMHO. But yes, even then–late 70s–people weren’t really afraid that they would actually be killed. It was mostly a well-founded fear of being mugged, almost exclusively after dark.</p>
