My daughter was accepted and now people are telling me the area and school are not safe. Can people comment? I do not know the area.
I asked my daughter, a sophomore, recently if she ever felt unsafe on campus and she laughed, saying no, not ever. And if it’s any indication, my youngest starts there in the fall.
The school is in a city, and there have been a few incidents in the last few years that have some parents concerned. Specifically, there have been a few robberies on the edge of campus — technically not on the SU campus, but close enough. The general thought is that like in any city, students should use common sense: don’t walk alone after dark, Don’t go to Thornden Park at night, etc. I do think that there could be better security in the dorms, I won’t lie, but I’m not freaked out the way a few parents are. My guess is that the crime rate is similar to other schools that are in a city.
I live in Syracuse already. Campus itself is as safe as any campus can be. The local police and the University police keep it pretty well watched. When students find themselves in a dicey situation it’s often when they find themselves somewhere they shouldn’t be or late at night having been partying. If kids use common sense and learn the neighborhoods a little I would say the risk is incredibly low. There’s lots of local students, so out of town students can always ask locals for advice about certain places or whatever, too.
I am a transfer student but also a parent of a 23 year old and I personally as a parent would feel comfortable sending him there. (But he wanted to go to Tampa lol)
