Okay, so I'm a junior right now. I think I can complete my app. by the early action deadline, but should I early action as many colleges as possible? Or should I early action safeties/matches so I can apply to only my reaches once RD starts?

i know some students apply to their reaches EA so they don’t have to waste app money on safeties.

Most people do what stephennn said. A lot of people apply EA to their reaches for an advantage.

Early Decision is different than Early Action. Think carefully before yoiu apply to a school ED.

If there is any chance whatsoever that you will need financial aid, do not, and I repeat DO NOT, apply Early Decision.

Before you go any further with this college application business, sit your parents down and have them run the financial aid calculators at [College Calculators - savings calculators - college costs, loans](<a href=“College Board - SAT, AP, College Search and Admission Tools”>How Much Will College Cost – BigFuture | College Board) so that they know what different types of schools are going to expect your family to pay. Find out just exactly how much they actually truly can pay, and are willing to pay. Chances are what the colleges will expect and what your parents can/will pay are two very different things. Expect some weeping.

The most important school on your list is your financial safety. Find it. Learn to like it. Apply early action if available, or rolling admissions if available, and pin that one down. Then take your time writing the beautiful essays that will get you into your matches and reaches, and that might get you better financial aid somewhere else.

^I agree with happymomof1 to an extent. In my opinion early decision should be your “go big or go home” school. If you plan on applying to ANY ivies they would be a good choice as ED schools because IF you get in money isn’t an object. A school like Harvard or Yale has multi billion dollar endowments and will give you the money you need. I considered applying to NYU for ED but didn’t because I realized that I might not be able to afford it so I just waited till the regular round.
