I got a 1170 on my march sat but an 1130 on my may sat what should I do?
Take practice tests. Review the math and grammar topics you missed. I use Khan Academy.
What preparation have you used? Have you taken classes, read a preparation book, or had a tutor? All of the above help.
Our local community center gives very reasonably priced preparation classes, and it is likely that yours does also.
Do you mind sharing your subject scores? You can mix match your scores for most schools. So if you did better for Math on the first and better on Reading on the second, they would use those scores.
Also, this is how I suggest SAT/ACT preparation to my students:
- Take a SAT or ACT practice test within the same time constraints as the normal test. Do not guess. This is so that you are can see what you REALLY know and not what you are guessing on and luckily get right.
- After you take the test, I mean right after... write down some notes to yourself on how you felt during the test, did you feel like you were using your time wisely.. what types of questions were you having trouble understanding... word problems.. problems with fractions... and so on.
- Grade the test and on a separate sheet of paper put down all the types of problems you got wrong. If you take a look at the answers sheet this should give you some hints if you aren't sure what type of problem it is.
- Then review the types of problems that you have missed. Not just the particular problem that you missed.... use a tutor, youtube, or whatever you can to review that topic, then go back and determine what you did wrong for that problem.
- How to study on your own: You should use the Pomodoro technique. The Pomodoro technique is a set of work sessions and break sessions. You set a timer for 25 mins and work/study for those 25 minutes free of distraction, then take a 5-minute break. After 4 work & study sessions, you take a 25-minute break. This keeps your focus on what you are doing, preventing you from distractions and also keeping you from burning out while studying. Believe me, you will get a lot more done than when you try to cram study for hours straight.
Test taking tips:
- Order in which you should answer questions: 1. problems you know 2. problems that take less time 3. problems you aren't sure on.
- When guessing, always mark the same letter all the way down ( it alternates letters, so what I mean is the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and so on). This increases your chances of guessing correctly... Christmas-treeing is the worst thing you can do.
- If you need to take a 30-second brain break during the test, do it.
- If you have been working on a problem for more than 30 seconds and you still aren't understanding it, skip it and come back after you've completed ones you for sure know how to do.
Tip: You should also take the ACT. Some students test better on the ACT than the SAT and vice versa.
Hope this helps!
