I am a senior in high school and I wanted to know if FAU had a premed program and if so how strong it is. Are there any reputable doctors or dentists that attended FAU? I really want to get into a great med school and I want to make sure my undergrad college can give me a good foundation. If anyone knows anything, I am open to any information. Thanx in advanced!

“Reputable doctors or dentists” is a strange phrase - all doctors and dentists are reputable. It’s a great accomplishment to not only get into one of those schools but to survive it and pass your boards.

To that end, yes, you can become a great physician or dentist as an FAU graduate. I have a friend who graduated from FAU (and medical school) who is on his way to a plastic surgery residency. Another friend is a neurologist. Two of my other friends are practicing dentists and one of them is an endo fellow.

All of them are FAU graduates. Hope that helps.

Are they famous? Maybe they will be one day. But right now they’re living their dream and that’s what counts.

I completely agree. That is exactly what I meant by “reputable doctors”. Thanks so much for your information. I think FAU is an excellent university from what I have read and heard from alumni like you. Many people at my high school don’t see FAU as that great of a university because its local. I believe differently and I can’t wait to study there come this fall!

Local schools are fine; every school is local to somebody.

The trap that local students fall into is that they come here and make no attempt to create a new college life for themselves. They’re living at home, being pestered by their parents, hanging out with the same people from high school and doing the same thing.

Don’t do that. Establish yourself here, make new friends, get involved (we have a pre-dental society AND two pre-med clubs) and make FAU your place.

Good luck and Go Owls.

Thanks so much and that is exactly what I plan to do! I will make the best of my time at FAU! Go Owls!

Woohoo! Glad I could help. Again, I would definitely recommend getting involved with the Pre-Dental Society ASAP and set up a meeting with an adviser in the Pre-Health Professions Office (in the Science and Engineering building) to flesh out your plan and get your ducks in a row before applying.

This is great,I am H.S Fau medical program. I did not know they offer pre- dentistry.
B.S pre-dentistry?
Will they have dentistry in the near future.
I do not think there is an official B.S. in pre-dentistry, but there doesn’t have to be. Students applying to dental school, much like medical school, typically earn a science degree - like Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Psychobiology, etc - and apply with that. As long as you’ve down your pre-requisite courses (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, etc) then they usually don’t care what major you have, and having a degree saying “pre-dentistry” wouldn’t give you an application advantage.
There were talks about adding a dental school but that has died down. The state would have to fund it and right now they’re not keen on adding more dental schools (or law schools, for that matter).
