How strong is UT Dallas' Computer Science?

@Batwing99 I would luv to visit UTD and I see it’s 70 in USA.

KY are FL are 90 in nation, so very similar in rankings.

In our case, we like KY to easily drive to (only 1 hour from Cincinnati, OH) and has NEW dorms, awesome college town, brick buildings, and connections with TECH companies in Midwest and National Level.

Still waiting on Carnegie Mellon (ranked ONE in the WORLD for Comp Science: fantastic!!— just would pay $$ for that, IF he even gets in…)

sounds like UTD is great for CS, but need to see check out more reviews for DORMS

We will be at UTD for Finalists weekend so I’ll be able to give more information about dorms next week.

@delilahxc is that finalists for McDermont? If so I’m looking forward to hearing a full report of the weekend.

@delilahxc How exciting! Is that for your son, or daughter who might attend UTD? We are going to apply to UTD!
Lovely hotels in Dallas! Nice weather! And great Comp. Science!

The dorms are great! They are new, each student has their own bedroom which can be locked. Each student has their own sink and personal drawer. There is a living which they supply a small couch, chair and table. Free cable. Nice lobby with pool tables, ping pong table and a kitchen. Free laundry and they text you when it is done. Close and cheap parking. The only complaint that I hear about the dorms is slow internet speed at night and they are trying to upgrade that. We visited many campuses and they had the best dorms. Now, the apartments are old and because of that have some issues. They are also building some new apartments for upperclassmen. I think you will be pleasantly surprised with the dorms.

I was really surprise with how nice the dorms were when we toured. I might try to encourage DS to apply to be a PA just so he can stay in the dorms past freshmen year;-)

@GTAustin has your D ever used to kitchen? I was wondering if they have some basic pots and pans available or do the kids need to supply their own. DS is already thinking he might like to take a good knife, rice cooker and wok to school.

@GTAustin Dorms have TWIN mattresses, correct? also, do UTD students in Comp Science find jobs easily in that area, or re-locate to other states?

@3scoutsmom is your son going to UTD?

Most likely, he’s still a high school junior. We toured last year with his sister. She loves OU and hated UTD, DS hated OU but loved UTD. If scholarships don’t work out then he’ll need to stay at home and go to UT Austin but I rather him have the dorm away from home experience so UTD is his current top choice. Youngest son has said he’ll go wherever his older brother goes he want to make my life easier:-)

@2sunny, unfortunately I’m answering all your questions under the wrong heading. I’ve just answered your career questions under the housing heading. As far as mattress size, it is the standard extra long twin.

Yes, we are attending for McDermott finalists weekend. We just got the final schedule this past weekend and oh my, it’s an intense weekend (for my son, not as much for me :smiley: ) While he very, very much would like to win this scholarship, we can make the numbers work even if he does not. (They just aren’t as pretty) For schools offering significant merit aid, this was the only one that would allow him to get a full bachelor of science in Physics while still also obtaining teaching credentials. He has put his housing deposit down and everything so he is committed to UTD regardless of the results of this weekend. I imagine there might be some mourning if he doesn’t get chosen, but he knows it’s the right choice for him.

It doesn’t hurt at all that starting salary for high school teachers in Dallas County is 20% higher than it is in our home county. And there’s currently a signing bonus for teachers in his field. Hopefully, that will still be there in four years!

Do you know if that is for internationals too? I can’t really find it on http://cs.utdallas.edu

1 thing to keep in mind whether student is local, or international… an Internship would increase his outlook in jobs.
@GTAustin or anyone: How come more National Merit Finalists do NOT Seek U TX Dallas for Computer Science? It seems they gravitate to Full Rides in AL, or Oklahoma. Maybe it’s the campus feeling and overall lifestyle, or easy access from home?

It is one of the slides (4th slide) at cs.utdallas.edu (google ut dallas and computer science) and they claim it at presentations. They do not specifically address it for international students. There is an article attached that references an IPP office (Industrial Practice Programs) and a name Jerry Alexander. Maybe you could email him and ask him that specific question. If he can’t answer it and I’m sure he would know who could.

@GTAustin

Huh. I had already read that article earlier. No helpful statistics tho. I guess I'll email him if I get the AES ("early March" they say).

@2sunny
Well yes, but internationals have restrictions on work. I will definitely look for co-op tho.

About people not choosing UT Dallas, I think it’s because of the commuter campus plus the school’s overall reputation (it was only built in the '60s, and reputation takes time). But more than that, it seems to be because of misinformation or plain ignorance. I read a comment here on CC that some students choose UT Dallas and UT Arlington only as a pathway to UT Austin. That’s a little harsh imo, and does not make sense (at least for UT Dallas). Some even cite the “ugly” campus as reasons not to go there.

I have a full tuition scholarship at U Alabama, which I’m going to accept if I don’t get AES here. From all that I’ve read on CC, U Alabama is a great school and the people are really friendly and helpful there. Everyone who goes there seems to like it. And the campus is beautiful.

@2sunny, UTD does have a different campus vibe than OU or AL. Both of those schools have huge football programs and Greek system. Those schools offer a more traditional college experience. They are also the large state well known state school. UTD does have a smaller school vibe even though it is 16,000 undergrads. That is one of the things that appealed to my DD.
It is also a very diverse campus and it is a very different environment than what my kids have grown up in. I think that is a very good thing but many of the kids from her school (or their parents) are uncomfortable with it and thats a knock against where I live, which is a suburb outside of Austin, not UTD. Its a school that people tend to have strong feelings about, either positive or negative because it is different because of its architecture, priorities, diversity.

UTD does get a significant number of NMF - around 100/yr. Most that I have met are premed not CS/Eng. I do think as far as Texas residents go, many CS majors go to UT because of their ranking. As far as getting there, it is easier than either OU or AL. Two large airports and a metro raid system.

Yes, the National Merit is great in AL ! http://scholarships.ua.edu/nationalscholars/

UTD has great CS program. It was our #2 above TAMU, Trinity, BAMA (full tuition + Engineering Scholarship) and UIUC (OOS, great school for CS but too expensive). Of course one can argue on traditional college experience but that was not a big factor for my child.
