My son transferred to UT Austin from out of state, undeclared major. He had a lot of AP credits from HS, about 30 something. He completed one full time semester at UT Austin and did well. He decided to get TX residency so he just completed one year of work doing that. Now he is interested in Computer Science but has learned since he is considered a junior he would have to appeal to be accepted and it would be a long shot. Hard for me be believe because he scored top 1-2 % nationally on SAT and 34 composite ACT as well as 5 on both Calc AB and BC AP classes in HS. But I guess it is very competitive and selective. I also have read on this forum that it is difficult for CS majors to get the classed they need. Not sure if that is still a problem. Does anyone have experience transferring to Computer Science Dept from within the school? Also does anyone know if a non Computer Science major can take CS classes? And does anyone know if UT Austin allows students to design their own majors? (some schools allow this). Thank you in advance. Please don’t let me down, CC!
I know a little - I do believe because he is considered a Junior, his HS stats will not be important but what he has done at the college level. I do believe most students who transfer into CS have close to a perfect GPA.
There has been issues with the students getting classes. They implemented a policy that students are only allowed to take 2 CS classes a semester with Seniors being able to request a third. This spreads the available spots to more students.
There is a CS certificate for nonCS majors that used to be 12 hours and I have heard they are increasing to 18 hours. There has been some talk here and on reddit that there is a waiting list and other depts. are supplying the classes because CS can’t.
Hopefully, somebody who is can confirm or tell me wrong on the above assumptions.
Thank you for this info. It’s too bad CS is so restricted and unavailable at the school. When I was in college eons ago, different school, but CS was part of Literature, Science and Arts. Anyone in LSA could major in CS as long as you kept up your grades. With high tech demand today, they really need to hire more CS faculty. Thank you for your help though!
