Post the most outrageous acceptance stories you guys have heard. And if you are that miracle NYU student, how the heck did you do it?

GSP students getting into GSP for sports reasons, despite sub 1000 SAT score.

Hm. I know some very qualified people doing GSP at NYU. Full time job, great SAT score, not a very bad gpa but still above average, IB-student, solid ECs.

They're going the thing where they study in another country for a year then they attend NYU in NYC.

Nice. Keep them comin'. lol

Enn, I wasn't saying all GSP students, I was stating there are several students in GSP that got in for the aforementioned reason.

It doesn't matter how you get in, methinks - what's done is done. What matters is what you do with your time while you're here. :) The worst thing, I think, is when people who look great on paper get in, and then they don't participate in NYU life other than go to class. I mean, yeesh, talk about passing up great opportunities!

whats gsp?

According to Admissions:

GSP is an opportunity for highly qualified students to attend NYU by entering the University as freshmen with a guaranteed transfer, upon successful completion of the program, to the NYU baccalaureate division to which they originally applied. The opportunity to attend GSP is offered only to a carefully selected group of students.

Students are not able to apply directly to GSP. The NYU Admissions Committee selects a limited number of highly qualified students from the pool of applicants to NYU’s four-year bachelor’s programs for admission to GSP. Students who are eligible to be considered for admission to the General Studies Program will be notified by the NYU Admissions Committee.

One of my roommates is in GSP and I think it's pretty cool. He's got a whole range of textbooks that are somehow related (although how they are is beyond me). Anyway, back in high school, I've known this one girl who, shall we say...was not such a bright cookie. Few clubs, 20% percentile with a pretty sub-par SAT score (at least according to the NYU range) and she got into CAS. I suppose the message to bring home is: it never hurts to sleep around with select admissions officers.

OMG! Okay guys, claws back in. I just really want to go to NYU and instead of doing a chances thread, i made a 'make me feel better' thread. Laugh everything off guys.

GSP=General Studies Program.

Sleep around with admissions officers?

The ones I talked to were all women.

Not that I'd ever do anything like that, no.

My apologies Mackie. Fortunately, I am one of those miracle workers you mentioned. My talents, however, lay in places other than the classroom.

No apologies needed here. But you will have to elaborate on your "other talents". What have you been up to? lol

I don't want to get into detail, but let us just assume that what I've been up to is not appropriate in this forum. I don't want to get on the DoveofPeace's bad side for having late night scrabble playoffs...oh, snap.

oh, snap is right.

Not to bring too much reality to this posting..but I guess I qualify as a miracle NYU student.

I had awful grades junior year of HS and only a couple of extra cirrics (did not hold a board position in any of them), I dropped out of high school beginning of my senior year (about a week after September 11, 2001) and intended to get my GED. I moved to Brooklyn and got a job for about 5 or 6 months hanging up posters 3 days a week and interned in the media industry for the other 3-4 days. While I was living in nyc I took the SATs which i did not bother to prep for, scored below 1200. Ended up running out of money due to a few unplanned expenses, broke my lease and moved back home.

I went to take the GED test and the woman who looked at my transcript informed me that I only needed a couple of credits to get a diploma from their adult school, so I enrolled. The courses were at your own pace and I tested for the last 6 credits I needed within 6 days of enrolling and ended up graduating a few weeks before the rest of my senior class. Figured I wouldnt get into any schools that I applied to, so I started working full time and enrolled at my local community college taking night classes.

After 2 years I needed to transfer. I didnt apply to many schools, in fact, Rutgers (I lived in NJ) and Stern were the only two that I can remember applying to at this moment. Anyhow, ended up getting into Stern, did pretty well, I graduated in '06 and now I work in Finance.

A lot of people ask me how I managed to get into Stern. To be honest, my best guess is that they liked my essay? haha, man this post makes me feel old, good times.

Wow...thats a really cool story. I am impressed.

thats crazy. ridiculous that you got into stern, seriously ridiculous. congrats though.

Major congrats man!
