How the hell are we supposed to get spending money?

Just an example...

"I plan on dropping 200-250/week. I am taking out a lot of loans to attend nyu, but my purpose of going to school in the city is to truly experience college in nyc, not live on a tight budget. I go out in new york all the time and an average night is dropping around 80. ($4-8/drink, entrance fees, cab rides cause the subways suck real late at night). Granted in this 200-250/week i'm taking into account that i'm buying a monthly subway pass ($78 so about 20/week), not getting a meal plan so will be buying groceries, and i like to eat out."

"200 a week is decent if you want to go out like 2 or 3 times a week (this is probably what I spent on boozing while at NYU). This averages out to $67-100 per night..."

I dont think even a part time job will help much...:X

One thing I do know I'll be doing though...

Hoarding as many jacks as I can, in secret of course, to my dorm. I don't plan on getting a job first semester so that leaves me with nothing but leeching off my current bank funds...which doesn't amount to much.

Some people do spend $500-plus a month, but I would guess they're not in the majority. You probably should budget about $300 a month, though.

If you look for a part-time job, many start at $10 an hour - absolutely no one pays the national minimum wage. If you get 12+ hours a week, you should have little trouble, financially.

I guess I'll try and wing it freshman year, and then get a job from sophomore year on. Hopefully get a paid summer internship too (I can hope, can't I? :)).

i'm doing what shades_childiren suggested. I mean, rightnow, I'm working 2 jobs at $9/hr and $7/hr, so if i can find something that's $10/hr, AAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!! An we DO have three day weekends since we have no Friday classes, so if you fit in a couple hours every day, and give up one of the weekend days, then you can make about $200/week. During the school year, I worked my entire weekends and made about $100 at $7/hr....so imagine if you get paid more, and space out the hours....that's a good deal!

I don't want to depend on my mother for my play money...

I hope I can find a job that has such flexible hours...

Im just taking a $1000 or so extra on top of a loan through myrichuncle.com for my spending cash (in addition to what i save over the summer). If im paying 46K a year, whats another thousand, ya know?

i completely agree w/ the last post...why would you want to work 15 hours a week for a little money and take away from your college experience. the money that you make can be added to a loan and in the future when you have a really good job the extra money that you took out will be a drop in the bucket

250 is a week is very misleading. freshman year you will have a meal plan in all likelyhood, which will knock down the week total to 150. everyone i know uses subways at night (its stupid to pay for a monthly subway pass, and then take a damn taxi) i partied 2-3 times a week, and never blew much more than $100 a week. I mean every few weeks itll be more expensive if you decide to go to broadyway or a baseball game or such. Also most people pregame, rich and poor alike, so you dont need to blow to much at bars/clubs. I work 40 hours a week in the summer, and save enough spending money, its not difficult...

I'm saving up during the summer and will have about $2000 spending saved up, plus I plan on making (a quite meek) $70/wk. with working America Reads (b/c my sched. won't let me do any more than that). So that money is mainly pocket cash/food, and all the other stuff like subway and necesseties will be pulled from my bank account, half of which I plan on putting on a campus cash card.

I'm not planning on going buck wild...more than $200 a wk. sounds crazy to me. haha. Then again I'm not a big party girl...
