How to apply to UK and US universities with different application deadlines

I am a student in the US and I'm looking into applying to several US colleges this fall, and I'm also seriously looking into applying to the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. Most application deadlines are January for US schools, but St. Andrews's isn't until May. This would be fine except don't most US schools require you to say whether or not you're going and send in a deposit to hold your place sometime in April? Therefore I wouldn't even know whether I got into St. Andrews until after the deadline was passed for committing to a US school.

Can anyone help me? I know a lot of US students apply to schools in both countries but how do you overcome this?

Thank you so much!

This is like getting off a wait list. You accept the offer that you like best, send a deposit, and wait to hear from St.A.

…Or you could just apply to St Andrews before the admissions deadline. Since it’s rolling, I applied in December (with an early action application I’d sent elsewhere) and heard in January, which was perfect for me. Its application is not particularly intense, so you should be able to finish it without much extra trouble once you’re finished with your American applications.

Thank you guys so much!
