I am a first year student. I am interested in applying for scholarships, internships, and research positions. Most applications require that I also submit one or more letters or recommendation.

How would I ask a professor for a letter or recommendation if they don't even know me? I am completing my first quarter.

Should I go to their office hours and ask them questions and get to know them better?

Thanks.

Do you have a faculty advisor?

Yes, and participate in class or anything else that will make you stand out.

Yes, I do have one faculty advisor.

Go to their office hours with something in your hands. Try an interesting article that they might find interesting. Do a little background research to see what area they research, books they have written, other classes they have taught etc.
