<p>Ok so I am an engineering major and I really want to get into an internship program this summer but I need 2 letters of recommendation. The problem is I go to a big university and I don't think my professors know I exist. I do always go to class and I have a 3.7 gpa but I always sit in the back and I never talk to them. How should I go about asking for a letter?</p>
<p>This is how I asked. But this was a professor for a very small class where the teacher got to see a lot of my work ethic and what not. Not some 200+ student lecture. Teacher knew me pretty well too, I probably would have kept it more brief if I didn’t know the teacher well.</p>
<p>Also, I did it over email because she left town after last semester. </p>

<p>First, I’d like to say that I hope you had a great summer. I can only imagine that you wanted some well-deserved rest after getting up each morning to teach our class and the class right after. I really learned a lot in your class and recently did a presentation for another class where I incorporated a lot of the techniques and skills I picked up. I definitely watch my inarticulates a lot more now, and I always strive to make a presentation feel more like a conversation than a lecture.</p>
<p>I’m writing you because I want to know if you would be willing to write a letter of recommendation for me. I am applying to the UMD business school this semester and they highly recommend submitting recommendations with one’s application. Please let me know if you would be able to, as I would greatly appreciate it.</p>

<p>For the upcoming semester/quarter, I would start by going to their office hours and introducing yourself to them. I’d say showing up three times and letting them know you are serious about your studies is good enough for them to you a rec letter. Just don’t be the guy who gets turned down for rec letters. I know of someone who went to ask her professor for a rec letter for grad school, but he simply told her that he cannot because he did not know her. Poor girl…</p>
<p>Would it be better for me to just wait until next semester and ask go to the first few office hours and then ask? Because I need the letters by February 15th.</p>
